Marlin 2012 Catalog

I noticed a few things ... in leverguns, probably missed a few too

No 1894SS ... stainless .44
No 1894cSS ... stainless 357
No 1895 Cowboy
Looks like the 1894 Cowboy is available only in .45 Colt, but the catalog is confusing
No 338MX rifles
No 444 rifles
No 450M rifles

The 336W and 336Y now come with laminated stocks

Hopefully this just means Remington is going to concentrate on a few best-sellers and get their QC up to snuff, then re-expand the product line.
Hopefully.
But I won't be surprised to see the product line further chopped to one flavor of 1895 (a .45-70 Guide Gun), one flavor of 336 (a 20" .30-30) and the 1894 limited to one .45 Colt Cowboy model and two Trappers in .45 Colt and .357 Mag, with the Cowboy being the only one that's not stainless.
Disappointed, yes. Surprised, no.

Eh! I always thought the .444 was always overrated. Glorified .44 Magnum, shoots cast bullets like a smoothbore, limited to 240 grain in factory jacked loads. I am surprised they dropped the .450 Marlin offering though.

I think I'd settle for an update of their website. Marlin has one of the absolute WORST website in the whole firearms industry.

I remember seeing pics of new models they introduced at SHOT shows a few years ago and there still isn't a mention of them on their site. Someone ought to give them a call and tell them that it's 2011 now and companies that want to succeed will usually update their online product info more than once every 5 years or so.

Absolutely no excuse for being that lazy towards your customers and those that might be interested in buying your firearms....

Hope the new Marlin can reorganize for the future.

I'd like to see a stainless Model 336BL.

Most knew they would drop the 450 marlin. There is nothing the 45-70 can't that the 450 marlin can. Yet another solution to a non existent problem. Marlin also had quality control issues long before Remington bought them. They haven't put a quality product out in years. It's been a craps shoot on what you will get

A very interesting opinion. Wrong, but very interesting.

I have had both the .444 and the .45/70, the .444 is so limited by comparison I just don't understand all the hype. It does have a sort of cult following but I say "To each, thier own" I thinks this has been beat to death here and over at castboolits. The .444 is clearly limited by Marlin's lack of engineering for cast bullet shooting. Micro-Groove rifling and a twist rate optimized for 240gr jacked bullets may have been the rage in the 60's when velocity was touted as the answer to all hunting application but it is clearly lacking for 350gr and larger cast bullets. Sorry the kid just can't hang with the old man, speed isn't everything.

Just for clarification, Marlins 444's use Ballard cut rifling and not Micro Groove.

Marlin hasnt used the 1-38 rifling in a LONG time, having gone to 1-20 quite some time back. Even at that, my 1-38 Microgroove gun slings the snot out of 300gr XTPs, at over 2100fps, from an 18" bbl, and with very good accuracy. If you want heavy, I have had no issues shooting the 355gr Beartooth hard casts, and have even had some decent luck with the 405gr Beartooth in Hornady LE brass. I think a better argument can be made that there really isnt anything the .45-70 can do, the .444 can't. I happen to like both calibers, but prefer the .444 by a sizable margin.

Looks like the 1894 Cowboy is available only in .45 Colt, but the catalog is confusing - Looks like they still have the 44 and 357 in the 1894, just look next to the cowboy. Web site sucks.

Still available in the 336C according to the catalog. Kinda surprised as it was axed from the XLR lineup a year or so ago.

The older models have Microgroove barrels. I have one of each. I've never shot cast through either of them so I can't comment on that.

I read today in Rifle Magazine that Marlin has only temporarily removed certain calibers and models. I have been a fan of the 444 Marlin since the first time I went deer hunting in the 80's so I hope they bring it back once they get their operations straightened out. Hopefully they can start turning out a good product again as the last few new Marlins I have seen were turds, and the ones before that were poorly fit and finshed as well.

I was hoping they would come out with an 1894 Mare's Leg...
...maybe next year!
