Winchester model 94 questions
My father in law gave me a Winchester model 94 that has some pretty significant rust. I'd started cleaning it up and it will never be "mint" as it has some pretty significant pitting. So I was thinking about having some fun with it. The wood is awful so I would like to put synthetic furniture on it and probably paint the rifle.
How do I mount the xssights scout mount? I want to add a micro red dot to this and have fun with it. Also is the leverevolution ammo safe in an old 94?
edit:: I just ran the serial on the winchester and it is a 1954 model. The savage m99 is a 1920 model...
1st thing I'd do is tear that puppy down and give it an oil bath. If its in the kind of shape you say it is, nothing you can do within reason will make it attractive. If the wood is salvageable I'd reuse that as well. My point is that this gun is not worth putting one more penny into it than you have to.
Now for the barrel. This is the only place I would spend some money. If after brushing it and using lapping compound the bore still looks real bad, I would buy a box of David Tubb's Better Barrel in a box bullets, "a box of 50" only use half of them, because if 25 abrasive bullets don't clean up that bore I'd use it for rebar the next time I poor cement.
Save the other 25 bullets to clean up the lead in a new .308 cal rifle you may have or will obtain.
You may need a new set of sights, but I wouldn't spend an extra penny here either. If you insist on a high visibility sight, look for a fiber optic replacement, they're better than a non magnifying optic and don't require a scope mount to install, plus they don't have lenses to get wet and need to keep dry.
If the wood is salvageable get a small bottle of Tru-Oil to refinish it.
For the metal, if rubbing it down with oil doesn't suffice, degrease it and use cold blueing on it.
Save your money for a more worthwhile project!
If you are talking about the Scout mount, it bolts to a threaded blank that replaces the rear sight (some also require epoxy).
The synthetic furniture is an easy swap, no fitting required.
(Before the purists have a hissy fit, the light was thrown on there just for the pic, as a joke.

)
No personal experience yet with the LeverEvolution ammo, sorry.
I should make note that the bore is fine. It is just cosmetic issues with rust on the outside. For some reason I want to build a "tacticool" lever gun.
Honestly I'm not going to throw more than 100-150$ in this rifle. It was given to me by my father in law and I just want to play around with it for the fun of it. He also gave me a early savage 99 in 30-30 that has the same issues.
Also how can you tell if a rifle is a pre-64? I believe mine might be.

Rifle has crossbolt safety. How can a purist have an issue with any God forsaken thing you want to do with it? I'd prefer smaller dot sight myself. FFII if you could get it to co-witness.
Mine does not have a cross bolt safety.
Now that Savage is where I would put my money on restoration. You can also use any bullet type for the M-99 and load to higher than standard loading levels because it is a lever operated bolt gun that locks up in the rear if I remember correctly, not quite as rigid an action as a front locking bolt but much stronger than the caming up type bolt of the M-94 design. The M-99 is more valuable too if it has never been drilled and tapped for a scope mount, in case you're thinking on selling or trading it.

One of the reasons I chose that one to "convert."
I have several pre-safety models, all much more traditional looking.
I'd possibly trade the savage off for something I will use. The m99 ls length would keep me from actually using it.
the 94's are nice little guns what caliber is it chambered in? That would make a dif to me on what i would do to it.
As for the 99 Want a carbine destroyer? ill trade ya straight up
