The Truck (Vehicle) Gun Search Continues

I caught the lever gun bug a while back. In the past few years I've picked up:

Marlin 336 in .35 Remington
Marlin 39 Mountie in .22 LR
Marlin 1894 CSS in .357
Rossi 92 in .357 with a 16" barrel

and tonight I added a Marlin 336Y (Compact) in 30-30. What caught my eye was the short barrel. 16.25" and about a 12.5" LOP. Very compact and quick to the eye. I paid $350 for it at Dick's and that included a scope.

At this point I need to break it down and give it a good cleaning and then take it to the range. I have an XS Lever Scope Mount and a Bushnell TRS25 that I'll try on it.

I will put a Peep/Ghost Ring sight set on it. I've had good luck with Skinners but I'm thinking about going with a set of XS sights this time around.

My travels could take me through Canada and this little 30-30 will definitely raise fewer eyebrows crossing the border than an AR. Also there is always a chance of theft with a truck gun and this one won't break the bank.

Marlinitis is a serious affliction and I have the disease,too. So far,I own an 1895 ABL,an 1895 Cowboy,a 336BL,and just put a 336Y on layaway.
Rugeritis is something else I'm afflicted with but that's another story.

Where did you find a 336Y? I may need to pick one up for my grandson.

There's a stainless, shorter barreled, ported (guide?) Marlin at a local store in .450 marlin.

I kinda want it.

I have a stainless ported guide gun in 45-70 (did not know they made .450s in other than blue). The price on the .450 would have to be really good AND I would have to be a handloader. Remington dropped the .450 when they moved production to NY, so .450 ammo and brass will probably be drying up.

I love my guide gun, and have considered a second one. Mine is setup with a low powered scope, I'd like to have one set up with ghost ring sights too.

Texas Knifeworks and Guns here in Wichita Falls has a nice 336Y in stock. Their number is (940) 692-4314. Ask for Ted. Please tell him I referred you.

Thanks, is that a pretty nice shop? I get up that way on occasion and always like to know where the good gunshops are?

I wouldn't be able to get up there for a while, too much going on.

I assume yours is a Marlin/Remington gun? Any problems with it?

Jim,it's a pretty neat little shop that has everything from classic firearms to Class III stuff. Lots of lever action stuff and revolvers, too.
The 336Y they have for sale is the one I had on layaway. Nice rifle but they just took in a mint stainless 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt that I've been looking for for quite awhile. So,I just swapped layaway items for now. If the 336Y is still available in a month or so,I'll try to get it too.
I'm just right down the street from the gunshop so you might give me a shout when you come to town. If I'm not working that day, maybe we can have a meet & greet.

The 336 Compact that I bought looked pretty good. One problem surfaced today when I took the scope mount off. The single mounting hole that didn't have a scope mount screw in it had something that might have been a screw in a previous life but it sure wasn't one today. I tried really hard to get it out as I wanted to mount an XS Lever Scout Mount. Eventually I put it under the drill press and drilled it out. I'll have to get a tap and clean out the threads so I can get a screw back in the hole.

Other than that it was clean. With the XS mount secured by one screw and the dovetail mount it is pretty secure and I went ahead and put a Bushnell TRS 25 on it and really like it.

I saw EOTECH 512s for $389 this weekend and may end up with one of those for the Marlin.

They had two of the 336 Ys at Dick's Sporting Goods and I wish that I had taken a good look at both of them. I was in a bit of a hurry and I'm paying for it now.

All in all I like this carbine. I'll keep it and I'll put a set of Peep Sights on it. It fits in a black 36" rifle case perfectly. It is camouflaged by the black interior of my car and the tinted windows. It is all but invisible in the back of my car. I can keep two boxes of ammo in the case and have a 9 round butt cuff on the carbine.

Will do. I used to go through there pretty often when my boy was in Colo Springs, and for a while one of our friend's was at Sheppard. But I still get up there once in a while.

It is just completely unacceptable for a major manufacturer like Remington to put out crap like that. I'm in the Aerospace QA business and that just does not fly with me at all.
