Scout scope for hunting: Fixed or Variable power?
Scout scope for hunting: Fixed or Variable power? which do you prefer and why
Too broad a question. Hunting what? With what? Where? When? And so on.

45-70 short distances in light woods during fall.
I've never wanted or needed anything other than a fixed 2x Leupold M8 on my Guide Gun. However, I also rarely have a shot over 100yds and most are under 50.
As mentioned, a fixed 2X would do just fine. You shouldn't need anymore magnification, and for shorter ranges, variable scopes are overkill. I currently use a holographic sight on my 1895GS. Usint the smallest dot size that came with my C-More, I'm good to 100yds easy. Also, using a holosight, it's easier to keep both eyes open, as there is no magnification. Speaking of which, as the magnification goes up, the ease of keeping both eyes open goes down.
For hunting I'd stick with a fixed power. Variables are better for the range.
