Basement or Attic storage, which is better choice?

My buddy is expecting a baby so the nursery is going to be put where his office is now. It also is where his gun cabinet is located along with his extra mags, cleaning stuff, etc. His choice is to put his stuff in the basement or the attic. He lives in the northeast, not sure which is best for lack of rust.

I am thinking the attic would be a better because it is not damp as the basement. There is still the extreme cold of the winter and the humid heat of the summer to deal with. I know a few people who have had alot of luck with the dehumidifiers in their toolboxes for the humid garage heat. Anyone have any past experiences or suggestions?

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Basements are humid, even in dry climate locations. Attics are dry, even in wet climate locations.

Humidity causes rust. Dryness causes wood to shrink and crack.

Keep your guns in part of the house where the air is conditioned with a furnace and cooler.

Find something else that you own to put in the attic and basement.

Guns are too dear for such treatment.

Gotta agree with Rugrat...here in Texas it is way too hot to store guns in the attic . Air condition space for those cherished firearms. Secure a small closet maybe...

Basement, assuming water ingress into the basement isn't a major concern (has it ever flooded?) Get a good dehumidifier setup, one that is sized to keep relative humidity around 50-55%. Make sure that there is a drain, pump, sump pit, or other automatic method for dehumidifier's water output, you don't want to have to worry about emptying it.

Garage may also be an option, with a heavy enough safe your temps should stay constant in the safe. Slow rise and fall of temps over the course of a year is not a big deal. Attics get hot. Going from 70-100+ degrees daily in the summer is not good on wood.

I'd love to have a basement. Worst thing about Texas :)
