Help me find info on DVR needs

I'm moving forward with my 2012 resolution to alarm my house. With all the info offered up by GrayMan I'm thinking I may also move up to video also. So while cruising through wallyworld I saw DVR's for $58. My cheapness kicks in and I immediately think I should grab a couple for my future project. But before I do I should know something about what I'm buying and why.

So what should I be looking for in the way of a DVR? Probably 4 camera's max if that matters.

If this is more complex than I think please direct my to a thread where there are details about DVR specs for security video recording.

Thanks.

Yeah I know, it's too early for new years resolutions.

Stay away from the DVR's you see in the big box stores, 99.95% of them are crap. You want to look at the recording resolution, fps , size of the hard drive just to name a few

The first thing i tell my customers is to upgrade the dvr right off the bat. If you think four cameras is enough get a eight channel, because once you put the four up you will see other area you want to cover.

I just completely redid mine. Everything I found retail was lacking.

I found a local store that also sells online, I got way better stuff for not too much extra.
