On the 522's, I see some now have what appears to be anodized aluminum fore end "gas blocks". They used to have the 556 looking gas blocks. Any difference other than cosmetic?
I've noticed too that newer 522s seem to have a machined aluminum fake gas block, while earlier 522s had a cast(?) one that seemed more like the original 556 gas block. Not sure what if any advantage there might be to one over the other, but the original style sure looks better to me.
For anyone who is interested in what the "new" gas-block looks like, check out a few minutes of this you-tube vid.
Video with new-style 522 gas-block...
I have an old 522 4-digit S/N with the cast block - which IMHO, looks better. OTOH, the new-style looks machined and plenty solid enough.

C'mon C_man. Old Jim's allright. That's me in 10 or so. Ha, ha.
I just noticed that the 556xi looks to have a similar gas block. I would hope it's made of steel rather than Aluminum since unlike the fake gas block on the 522 the 556 actually passes hot gas through it and I don't think aluminum would stand up to that very well.
