Got my 551-A1 lower, here's my SBR

P556 SBR:
-551-A1 lower
-CO Gun Sales 550 handguards, cut down/holes drilled/installed by DDLES using DDLES retaining cap
-Sig factory front flip sight
-Troy low profile rear flip BUIS
-Primary Arms Comp M3 clone with Aimpoint lowest mount
-Sig newer style straight charging handle
-MFI 3-prong 552-style flashhider
-weight 7lb 3.5oz including optic, not including mag
I removed the Sig SWAT rails and the 556 lower w/UBR stock, now this thing is so much lighter!
The gray color of the 551-A1 lower is a little more pronounced in the photo, it really doesn't look bad at all with the black upper, at least not enough for me to paint either the upper or the lower to match. Only other mods I would consider right now would be the Swiss-height 552-style hooded front sight and rear drum/rail combo from MFI, possibly available soon in 2012. The optic does NOT co-witness with the sights now as the irons are slightly too tall for the optics mount.
ETA - just wanted to say I love this gun. I have never once had a malfunction of any kind.

I'm just waiting on my stamp to do the exact same thing, already have the pistol and the lower I'm using on my 556 riflle right now. Where did you get the SIG factory flip front sight? I didn't see any at COgunsales. Can you get them from SIG in Exeter?

Does anyone know if SIG-Sauer is still selling just the complete 551-A1 lower? I should have the money for one in the next month or two, and I'd rather go that route than buying a complete 551-A1 rifle just to get my hands on a lower for an SBR build.

IIRC, it came on the gun when I bought it used back in 2009. It was an earlier P556 that came with the flip front sight from the factory. It is the taller version of the Swiss flip sight.

Nice build! SIG is releasing a factory 551-A1 SBR. I already have a 551-A1, but I might have to jump on that.
Also a 522 10" SBR. I was going to buy a Commando and have it chopped but they may have saved me the trouble.

I can't see spending $200 on a tax stamp for a dedicated .22LR, but that 551-A1 SBR is exactly what I was thinking about for my 556 Patrol (assuming I decide to fork over the cash to SIG for a 551-A1 lower). I'll probably still SBR the Patrol since I already have it, but that is a sweet looking rifle. Maybe I will come into some money unexpectedly.

I already have a 551-A1 and a 522, love them both. I have the extra money to spend on the 522 so I will get that one as well as the 551-A1. But I agree if I only had money for one the 551-A1 would be my choice.
