I had mine two months ago, not as bad as I was lead to believe. ATF inspector came in house validated I could do firearms business in my county. Took copies of my traders license, Federal Tax ID, State Sales n Use tax form. She brought all the ATF reg books, state reg books and walked me through the process of filling out the correct forms. She asked several times to see if I was going to sell only to me and friends, don't be caught off guard and let loose by saying yes. You are in the business to sell firearms and make a profit. Remember that. She asked to see where I was going to conduct business. I showed her the basement location with safes. They are very concerned about theft. Make sure you have cameras, alarms and safes. If not have a plan to be putting them in. Also, make sure you have atleast one trigger guard on site at all times.

No big secrets, if they are coming in to see your house, you have passed everything else. It is more of a "let me show you the papaerwork and see if you are going to secure guns".

She also gave me number to contact to set NICS up for you with your codeword. Used when you call in for background check on customer.

Good luck.

Your advice is good however..."safes, cameras and alarm system" are not required....suggested maybe but NOT required.

Thanks for clarifying on the cameras and stuff. I did not intend to say they were required, they just focused on them alot with me.

Good catch.

when you say I build what do you mean by that.
Do you mean you build your own stuff for your self such as completing a Lower and other items or do you mean you build stuff for your customers ?

Not sure what FFL you are getting but if you plan on building things for your customers you need to get the proper license to do so.

I do transfers in my Kitchen or my Office

I use a steel cabinet to store items that I am getting for Transfers that is pretty much all you need.

Keep you personal items separate from your personal inventory - if you keep your stuff together make sure you label your personal items as personal items and not for sale

I use tags from Brownells and also use the Logbook sold by Brownells. I keep a separate Logbook for Handguns / Lowers and Rifles you do not need to do this but it makes it easier in my opinion.

good luck

Inspection went well. Got my Type FFL 07. I will give you a play by play in case someone is in the same boat as me. I was very organized and ready. Had all LLC info, State tax exemption and Federal EIN # and HOA non object letter all copies made for him and that was the first thing he asked for.

ATF IOI was super nice. He asked to see my "manufacturing facilities" and I showed him my garage. He was not impressed and said I was pushing the envelope asking for an 07 instead a regular dealers license. But that was all that he said about it.
The interview lasted 3.5 hours. Lots of talking and hypothetical what ifs. I was surprised about how much he did not know. Asked about AK47 flats and serial numbers. Did not know what a "flat " was. Asked about 80% finished lowers and never heard of them.

I did not push the issue and went with the flow. All and all it was just time consuming I worked my self up for nothing. It is a bit weird having a guy come in with an ATF shirt on and ATF windbreaker and tactical khakis sitting at the kitchen table.

Also be sure and ask for his ID when you invite him in. He was all bent that I did not ask. He asked for my DL to make sure it was me. There is a lot of dumb ass questions that they ask just policy and I just answered what was asked.

If I could give one piece of advice is have all your papers filled out and copied ready for him. And also get the A/D book because that was a good hour of conversation. He will have examples and it is not required it is good to see in the exact book you are going to write in.

Did not ask to see any of the house. I had two different types of trigger locks on the table. I do not have a gun safe and it is not required. He did not ask to see anything else in the house.

That is all I can think of. Hope it helps someone that is about to go through it

Interesting. I had absolutely nothing as far as tools, locks, etc., when I got mine. Told them I was not going to spend money till I had license in hand. Had no problem. Of course, some 07 actions only require basic handtools. Not everybody needs roomful of CNC machines. As far as papers, I had submitted all that with application. Mine showed ID before we even started, did not have to ask.

Don't forget to register with DDTC and pay the ITAR fees. That can come back and bite you in the rear.

Also I forgot to mention any of this. But my agent was gay. Pretty obvious. Now don't start bashing me I have not said anything just completely took off guard. He also cant stand the NRA and made multiple and I mean more than one comments about the NRA being the worst thin for gun control and blah baa blah. he said Clinton and abeam is going to save the assault weapon problems in the next few years,

No I am sitting here looking at all this hand wavy with jazz hands thing wtf would agent be in my kitchen openly bashing the Nara

I thought they work together, I just kept saying yes sir sir just sin my sheet

call me today and said my form was don't and will have the final in two weeks from DC.

I asked if I could call the at for questions and he said just don't ever ask for an agent. They will get so pissed to do small shit like this you have to find an IOI on duty,

Just it was funnythought shit

OH well i git my license

It is the annual fee paid to the department of state in order to manufacture firearms. It is $2250 a year on top of all of the other fees and licensing costs. And they will come after to you for them.

Without the NRA he would not have that job.

Yeah we had some tools but not all of them before we started. Our IOI didn't care, though he did say he normally handled Type 01 and not Type 07 FFL's so maybe that's the reason.

State Department - PMDDTC ITAR

Since it's under DoS and not DoJ the ATF won't tell you about it. DoS writes the regs, DHS/ICE enforces them and after seeing how they operate I'd rather deal with ATF - at least they're halfway rational.
