I live in NW Ohio, literally 200 yards from the Michigan border. A buddy from Michigan wants to buy a pistol from me. Do I have to ship the pistol to an FFL in Michigan, or can I drive to the nearest shop in Michigan and hand it to the FFL for a transfer to my buddy? I know that BATF ‡ common sense and want to do this with no risk of time in a jumpsuit. thanks in advance

im curious about this as well for rifles as well as pistols.

I'm putting together an ar15 for my stepfather this xmas and i'm curious as to how i'm actually gonna go about getting it to him with the least amount of hassle and no legality problems. He's two states away from me.

in for answers!

Your buddy in Michigan can only acquire firearms other than a rifle or shotgun from a licensed dealer in his state of residence. He is allowed under Federal law to acquire rifles or shotguns from a licensee in any state (as long as the firearm is legal to possess in his state of residence).

You can ship the handgun to a Michigan dealer or deliver it in person. It might be wise to contact the receving dealer before driving to his shop so you can confirm fees.

Box it up, weigh & measure the box, pay and print a shipping label at usps.com, drop it off at any Post Office. You must ship to a licensed dealer in your fathers state. When it arrives your father will fill out a 4473 and must pass a NICS check.

+1 with dogtown tom. Can drive it over to a dealer in michigan and hand it to him to do the transfer - just has to go through an FFL in mich. since you're an OH resident, and the buyer is not an OH resident.

Our shop is on the Kansas - Oklahoma line, and we do this several times a year. BATF doesn't care if you ship it or drive it there yourself.
