Gun Shop insurance?
I am in the BEGINNING stages of opening a small gunshop. The retail space will be less that 1,000 square feet in a VERY nice 10-11 year old shopping center. I have worked in gunshops over the years and I am VERY excited about this opportunity. I am also scared to death. I am looking for info on 2A friendly insurance companies for both business and liability insurance.
Can anybody suggest companies for this and also give me an idea of what they might require in the store as far as securing overnight storage, during sales hours security, yada yada yada.
I know the NSSF has a list of "approved vendors" or something like that and so does the NRA, I think, but i am looking for guys and gals "in the field" and their input on persoanl experiences.
Thanks in advance.
So there is no input for this?
I sell business insurance in Michigan as an independent. My suggestion is call a few local, family owned agencies and explain this to them.
It is actually a pretty standard policy. We don't have a market for gun shops, so I can't give too much advise.
I will say that being a start up business with no experience, you are going to be looking at a non standard company with a higher premium for the first three years. Depending on the state, here if you W2 a worker, you will need a workers comp policy. If you 1099 a worker, you will need them to carry their own insurance, otherwise you will be charged for them.
If you are leasing the space, you need a lessors risk policy. You will need general liability policy, and property coverage for all contents in the store. You will get discounts for alarm, automatic sprinkler system. Usually, liability is based on your gross sales, so try and have an idea. Other than that, your agent will be able to advise you beyond this, and be able to package all of this into one neat little policy, or two if you get workers comp.
Good luck.
Thanks for the info.
This Link! ^^^^ We use Joe Chiarello also, they're very good to deal with to get set up and luckily we haven't had to deal with them on anything else yet!
