Steyr charging handle on MSAR STG556
This is an advisory and also a request for thoughts, ideas and recommendations. I don't like the standard MSAR charging handle, either for it's feel, or for the way it folds up. I think it makes it tougher to lock the bolt to the rear. So thinking it was a fairly easy swap, I bought one of the A1 sets from Pete Athens. The inner and outer parts. Getting the old charging handle off was fairly easy. Punch out one roll pin, remove the handle and pull the inner parts out from the bottom. The assembly of the A1 parts also went smoothly, other than the fact that the charging handle needs some relief work (trimming) on the bottom or it drags.
Here is the more serious difficulty. The inner diameter of the charging assembly, where the operating rod fits, is slightly smaller than the MSAR. So the op rod won't go in all the way. In fact, I didn't notice that issue until I reassembled the rifle and then had it jammed in place. A pain in the ass to say the least!
My solutions seem limited to 3 possibilities.
1. Forget changing the parts, reassemble the old ones and just eat the wasted money.
2. Carefully reduce the diameter of the knob on the end of the operating rod until it fits. This will make it pretty sloppy on the MSAR parts if I ever go back.
3. Carefully relieve the interior of the charging assembly until it fits. Tougher than reducing the diameter of the op rod knob.
I would choose door #3 and lock the piece down on a vice and take my time with a drill bit or dremel....
of course there's always door #4 - sell the Aug handle and buy a Manticore Arms one....

I'd go with option 4.
The manticore arms handle is great.
My Manticore Arms handle works O.K. for charging, but it won't hold the bold open reliably on my E4. Tends to spontaneously pop out of the lock notch, which can be *exciting* at times. Just a FYI. YMMV.
Personally, I'd go for option #3 (OPs list).

Shoot me an email, it is likely one if two causes, and I can probably even tell you the serial number range your gun is in.
