Scuff marks on bottom of Aug A3 bolt carrier. UPDATE: 092111 -help fellow aug owners-

Purchased a new bolt carrier from Steyr, shot less about 200 rounds of brass cased ammunition (PMC and Federal) from Magpul Pmags, and found dents in the bottom of my new bolt carrier. I'd appreciate hearing from other AUG owners as to whether their rifles show similar "wear." These dents are not just surface wear but actual dents in the metal that have changed the smooth surface to a washboard.

ORIGINAL POST BELOW

Any ideas? Anyone else have this happen to them? Looks like the rim from the top round in the magazine is hammering into the bolt carrier while it cycles. The affected area is rough to the touch and seams to be more than just the finish wearing away. Rifle still operates without issue but I've never seen this on the bolt carriers of any of my other weapons (including an MSAR). Sent an email to Steyr as well.

UPDATE:
Spoke with the Steyr gunsmith on 090111 and it was recommended that I not use steel cased ammunition as it is believed that the steel cases are responsible for the abnormal wear on the bolt carrier. When asked, he was unsure as to whether this wear would eventually effect function if I continued to shoot steel cased ammunition. So, if I understand correctly, Steyr is suggesting that steel cased ammunition be avoided.

Not too sure but if it was the rim of the brass I would think you would see some brass imbedded in the bottom of the carrier. Just a thought.

Don't think brass is hard enough to do that..

What kind of magazines are you running?

The magazine would not be hitting that area. My guess is the bolt catch is rattling and hitting it. Your hammer is plastic right? No aftermarket one installed? That would be my second guess.

Hammer pack is stock (plastic). Magazines include pmags, lancer advanced war fighter, bushmaster, and c products. Ammunition includes federal xm193, tula, brown bear, and herters. I'm thinking it might bee the rim of the steel cased ammo, but I've shot hundreds of rounds of steel through an MSAR without scuffing. The other possibility is the metal feed lips of the lancer magazine but it doesn't appear to contact that part of the bolt carrier.

anyone else have an A3 they run steel ammo through?

I was thinking out of spec mags such as c-products (they had a terrible rough patch) being too tall and scratching your BCG.

Rizzo is a machinist and more familiar with the system though, so if he doesn't think it's the magazines..

Have you checked your bolt stop like he mentioned?

This doesn't help the original poster................................but I can't help but wonder where all of the MSAR haters are? I gues they are not saying anything because this time it's a problem with a real-deal AUG and not a clone.

ETA: and by the way, those do look like marks from casings. Notice how the marks are as wide as the contact point of a rim case? The marks are also staggered right and left like they would be in a magazine. If you are using steel cased ammo they very well could remove some of the finish on the carrier.

The steel cased ammo would be my best bet (now that I know you are using steel cased...brass would never do that). You have what look like two distinct sets of marks (which would make sense since the mag feeds from both sides). Depending on what type of carrier you have in your MSAR this may or may not show. A black nitride surface has a very hard surface and most likely wouldnt show these kind of marks. I have a bunch of brass on the bottom of my parkerized carrier. The reason I say it is not the mag itself is because the feed lips go into the recesses on either side of the carrier, much like an AR carrier.

PS. Im a rifle engineer, not a machinist. Although I did run a lathe today

My A3 has run Tula and Herters and I do not have this problem. Though I have only used Steyr AUG mags and P-Mags. Think it might be a mag issue, not the mag itself.
AUGs rule.

Not a hater just a disliker !! As far as the AUG comment , you guys deserve a little pay back after all the problems MSAR has had. Personnally im excited its an AUG problem because it doesnt happen that often and its a challenge to figure it out. Thanks to the OP for coming forward , hopefully we can sovle his problem. Right know im kind of stumped.

Got a reply from Steyr in less than 24 hours, said they were going to have an armorer look at the picture.
