MSAR’s XM-17 E4 Upgrade
August 4, 2010

MSAR’s XM-17 E4 variation of STG that accepts M-16 magazines.

This is from the MSAR interal forum-

We are offering a free stock magazine catch upgrade. All current E4 stocks were manufactured w a composite internal magazine catch. We are finding that this composite is failing in their assemblies causing magazines to become stuck or locked in the stock housing. The new catches are made of heat-treated stainless steel.

Please contact our customer service manager Paul Thomas for this upgrade.

I just got mine back today. I mailed it off on the 13th and got it back today so 5 days turnaround was pretty darn good. I wasn't having problems with mine but I got it done anyhow to make sure it didn't fail later down the road.

On a side note, the mag release feels smoother now. I assume it's because its plastic on steel instead of plastic on plastic. It was well worth it.

Hmmm, that actually fixes the thing that's kept me very leery of buying one of these rifles. I guess we can assume that all new production rifles would be shipping w/the steel mag release upgrade, right?

The site says they are also making 5.45, 6.8 and 7.62x39 versions of the E4 as well....

Good to know about the free upgrade though :)

I got mine sent off to Paul today. He told me one day turn around (shop time). Look forward to getting it back in good working order.

I would guess so, but take precaution when ordering one that you don't get an old one. I ordered one a month ago that according to Paul is one of the "very early E4s." Regardless, mine is being taken care of, and once this issue is settled I will be completely confident in my rifle. Aside from the BHO; an easy fix, no other function problems to report. This rifle is somewhat of a new design. I new that going in. FWIW, I am satisfied with how my issue has been handled. Furthermore, I have been experiencing a very disgusting impulse to sell my AR to fund another one.

Just sent 2 of my 3 E4 stocks off yesterday afternoon (8/19/2010). I called Paul and left him a message, and he called me back THREE TIMES leaving a message each time before he was able to get 'hold of me. That's pretty impressive.

The plastic mag release parts always concerned me too (hence the spare stock) so I'm very excited to see this upgrade.

I chatted with Paul the other day. Really great guy! I also agree that Paul is going out of his way to make sure the users are getting support. I think things will be ok with MSAR. Paul mentioned that he has a 7.62X39 setup on one of his MSARs and with decent mags it is fantastic to shoot. I reminded him there are a lot of E4 owners who want the conversion kits. Bessie they are fully aware and a few full rifles in other calibers maybe in the pipeline soon for us to purchase.

The replacement part is stainless steel mag catch and it replaces a plastic (polymer?) one that wears causing the stuck mag issue (or as I call it Californication because it makes it a non removable mag rifle).

Awesome.

Did any of us figure out that was the problem? If not we're slipping.

Plastic on steel though isn't going to be an issue over time is it?

Seems that the polymer part would wear in a higher tollerance area (the edge area of the catch as it locks into the mag) and
this caused a tighter fit in to the mags latching hole. The real issue seems to stem from this tight fit! Once
that happens it takes increasing pressure to release the mag itself and this increase in presure will cause the originally polymer part to flex. Repeated flexing causes the part to weaken and warp. So the stainless part is designed to fix the issue.

As far as stainless and polymer parts working together being an issue, I would think that given the way the mag release works it should work without issue. As long as the stainless part is smooth and bur free it should simply slide smoothly aginst the polymer part.

I sent mine out last Saturday and it came back today with the new SS part. Fast turnaround and it works great.

Thanks Paul!

I emailed Paul 2 days ago for a return authorization and haven't gotten a reply. I'm not going to ship back without some communications with MSAR, so I guess I'll call on Monday. Hopefully I can get thru.

I would rather the mags wear out than a more critical, less readily available part (mag catch).

Some of the post's in here are helpful in not letting me completely write off MSAR as of yet. I'm on a few bucks away from being able to purchase one so hopefully things really start looking on the up and up before not too long.

Here's a pic of the new mag release. It's much stronger than the original part. I tried GI, MSAR and pMags... they all lock and release properly now.

MSAR has had my stock as of the 08/23/2010. I have tried to reach Paul via both email and voice mail multiple times with no response. He was VERY helpful when I first called him to get my RMA number so I hope to hear from him soon or receive my stock early next week.

Fingers crossed...

I either called back on Thursday or Friday and spoke to Paul. He sounded busy. Simply gave me the RMA # and then hung up. He told me that he was up to his neck in stocks.

Also was your RMA # a four digit code? A letter followed by three number right?

My RMA was a letter followed by a two digit number.

If you know he received your stock, why are you trying to get in touch with him "multiple times" less than 5 days after they received your stock? Just imagine that one guy already having to take all our calls for all our RA# requests, then receive them, fix them, and ship them. If he called each and every stock owner just to say "got your stock" which you should already know from your own tracking number and then again to say "fixed your stock and shipped it" then it will take him three times as long to fix them all.

I sent my stock in, saw that it was delivered, never called, never e-mailed, and got my stock back in a few days.

Now that everyone and his brother is sending their stock in, it might take a week for turnaround... There IS a such thing as expecting TOO MUCH communication.

Thanks for the heads up. Taking mine through a course next month, want to get out ahead of any problems.
