How many loose 5.56 rounds fit in an Ammo Can. With Pics!

Since I never actually sat down and counted how many loose rounds fit in each can I decided to do it.

I just bought 2400 rounds of IMI M855, here it is with the three cans.

"Fat .50" or M249/SAW can on the left, standard .50 can center, and a .30 can on the right.

The .30 cal can held 660 rounds loose.

The .30 cal can dumped into a standard .50 cal can to show the difference.

A standard .50 cal can holds 1200 rounds loose.

The standard .50 can can dumped into a "fat .50" can.

And the "fat .50" can holds 1830 rounds loose.

Beautiful IMI M855...

Probably, but I didn't really want to make adding the single rounds up any more difficult.

I'm more excited to turn this stuff into brass and start reloading it.

I wonder how many .45s would fit in that FAT .50 can ?

I only have one box of .45, so no dice there.

I'm betting if you filled it with loose .45 rounds you'd get to spend a lot of quality time down at its level if you tried to lift it.

im thinking about doing the same with a stash of 3k AE223 rounds i have, but i think i rather save the factory and buy some cheap once fired brass or get some range pickups to load.

The next question is, how many rounds on stripper clips will fit in the cans

I don't have enough stripper clips to try that either.

I guess I'll see how this IMI shoots, if its good I might save it and load my other brass.

But if it doesn't group its getting burned up and reloaded.

IIRC, I have several normal 50 cal cans filled with 1200 rounds on stripper clips.

Just don't pickup the big 50 (full) and drop it on your toes.

did they throw in the cans for spending $758 on ammo?

You didn't try loading the boxes first did you?

I didn't even think to try them in boxes.
I could try the empty boxes and see how they stack...

No, just some of the extra cans I had laying around.
I stacked up quite a few of them when I could find them for $5 or so.

Somebody posted this pic a few years ago. I was so impressed by the stacking of 1000 rds of .223 into a .30-cal can, I made it one of my first de-motivators.

I was able to get 1110 rounds of IMI M193 in 30 round boxes into a .50 can.
Believe it or not, the IMI M855 30 round boxes are bigger, and I could not fit as many. (I no longer have that can of M855, and I don't remember how much it held.)

Good info, thanks for figuring it out and posting.

Also good info is the OCD 1K in a .30 can.

It's been a while since I bothered counting, but if I recall, a regular .50 can holds about 2k rounds of .45, if I recall, so that's what, 100 lbs?

The ~1800 5.56, on the other hand, should be a little under 50 lbs.

The question isn't how many would fit, but rather could you lift it when it is full.

Good to know. I can tell you that 3700 rounds of 9mm fit in a Fat .50 can!

Cheap enough for me.

A guy was selling it locally for $350 per box of 1200, so I bought both.

I would only have to lift it once. Load it into my truck and then leave it there till it was empty just like I always do. Most of the time those are on the floor though.

How many loose rounds of .45 will fit in a regular 50 & a 30?

I did get 1280 rounds of 5.56 loose in a regular 50....

500 45 ACP rounds in a 30 cal can is a good fit. Not too heavy to lift.

45 ACP rounds in a full 50 cal can is a good boat anchor. Too heavy for me.

The last time I loaded a bunch of 45 I'm pretty sure I fit about 700rds in a 30cal can.

I prefer 30cal cans for all my bulk stuff because of the weight.

Agreed

I'm just trying to figure out a round count- maxed in regular 50cans of loose 9 & .45.....

Couple of cans of 9mm.

Far left 1k in plastic boxes in a 50 cal can.

30 cal cans;

Next has 500. No amount listed on my load data card, I'm guessing 500 in this can.

869 in the next one, on the far right that's 990 rounds. So 1k will fit loose in a 30 cal can.

As always work up your own loads.

If you want some help putting them back in all the boxes, let me know and I will drive over and help ya for a small fee. If you are really nice I might bring a bottle or 2 or Dang..... Speaking of which I need another case of that stuff.

This conversation is confirming my previous research: 50 cal cans suck for ammo storage.

that just means it doesnt rise as much out of the barrel doesnt it? and you have to use a slower twist?

I'm around 745+ maybe 780 of 45acp loose in a 30cal.

I have a 50cal filled to the top with 9mm and that thing is heavy!
Gotta be two thousand rounds or more...
