 Golfball launcher

Well I have looked high and low for a recipe with blanks with a AR golfball launcher.

I have not yet come up with one. One guy posted one for a cut down Israeli grenade load.

I will post photos later, but until then my post will have to do.

I used some range pick-up brass that had bent/dented necks.

Wolf SRM primers.

The balls are lake pickups ( I have Thousands)

They fit in the tube pretty well. Not tight but the air pressure slows the ball as it seats.

For powder I used Unique.

2x blanks per:

5gr is good
7gr is the best I can eyeball the ball with in feet of the cars at 100yds, and arch them hundreds of feet more.
9gr too much
11gr
13gr
I might make a 3gr starter load.

I Picked these numbers out of thin air, do not replicate or duplicate them please....

I hope to send the balls about 100 yards into and off of Flaming cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs.

I know they will not be a strait shot but if I can arch them in, aiming 10-15ft high I would be happy.

Reefraider will post AAR here is I lose my fingers or sight.

Going shooting on Sunday.

Is the golf ball launcher an under barrel attachment or something that goes on the end of the barrel?

since he's using blanks I'm going to say it's a barrel attachment.

My practice grenade loads are with Red Dot. 5gr will send it up 300+ feet. 2gr will send it up about 100ft. Try 2gr start load with Red Dot and go up from there. I don't think you will need more than 5g with any fast burning powder. Bullseye would work too since it's fast burning. I have never tried Unique.
As always YMMV etc....

What if anything did you pack on top of the charge, to keep it next to the primer??

It would have been a good idea to have tested this before you bring it out on the firing line.

In for the video and ensuing hilarity...

Looking forward to results!

I did not pack any thing in the case, that might have been a good idea.

I did try to test the loads, the the range was closed for 10 days due to lead removal.

Have you tried to load your blanks from the mag ? This would allow you to load after the golf ball is in your muzzle device.

They chamber 75% of the time from a mag.

RR you think the ROs will be cool this week end?

You might want to take it out in the sand to test it 1st. That way you'll be away from the other shooter's.

Really waiting to see what the results are. I have yet to try out my launcher, as I've only managed to scrounge one golf ball

FWIW, the launcher as sold by CTD under the "Cowtown Shooters" or some such is actually UTG. The threading is just plain awful. ....And crooked.

Ok, I took some photos but another ARFCOMer has more on his camera.

5grs was VERY nice and surprisingly flat.

7grs was the same. I was eyeballing more then aiming. But aiming a few feet over the cars @ 100yds. The balls were streaking past the cars within feet!!!!!

9gr This is were the balls started to loose there accuracy. They would fly a few hundred feet and "bottle rocket" spinning, curving, and pitching away from my point of aim.

11gr faster but worse

13gr faster but worse yet

15gr I shot one up at about 80* it flew up about 3-400ft and veered hard left WAY out of the range WAY over the burm in to the State forest.

7grs FTW photos later

How are you closing the ends/neck????

I have one and buy factory blanks, would love to roll my own blanks!

Do you use some kind of crimp?.... Sealant?

I was taking a 6 piont socket and tap it on to start the crimp, then dykes to finish.

Not pretty, but feed from the mag 9 out of 10 times.

No filler, no sealer.

Monkey_Wrench

Chas with the golf-ball launcher. 150 yard shots were a breeze. Capturing a golf-ball in flight with my camera was harder...

I'd offer to make you a star crimp die, but my shop is all packed up so they can redo the concrete floor.

So you just throw in 5gr of Unique and use no other filler or sealant?.... Really?

I just put 5gr in a 223 case and it looks like it won't even burn evenly and fast enough to expell a blank with all the extra room in the case.... Is that right?

Nice

Golf ball launcher is fun. I contemplated rolling my own blanks, but was able to get a 50cal can full of loose mil blanks for $20, so I just use those.
Wish I had more golf balls.

I buy the net bags of recycled balls at wally world 17.95 for 60, so far I've used US 1970's M-200, DAG plastic and PRivi M-200's from Grafs. BTW my launcher came in a green NCStar box and is theaded very well. C-H makes a blank die set, but it costs $80 plus shipping. This looks like a great way to use split necked cases I toss away. My launcher will send balls so far I have to shoot over water just to see where they land, especially with the Privi. accuracy run a string thu the ball and hang it out the launcher , reduces range but stops slicing.

putting two balls in the launcher cuts your range by more than half shoot three balls and they land here you can pick them up easily FYI
