 Reloading 223/556 with Accurate 2520?

Did a search but not finding much. Sportsman's wharehouse finally supplies in stock, and it looked like good velocities from the Speer reloading manual.

I'll do a batch to test in my rifle, but was just wondering if this is a good choice for 5.56 velocities.

You'd be better off with 2230, unless you're shooting heavy bullets.

If you can find an old Accurate Arms loading book, they have loads listed for 2520 and 55 grain bullets. 2520 may not be the best powder for light bullet .223 loads but it's certainly acceptable.

AA2520 is good stuff for the 77grainers here is some quick load data

: .223 Rem.
Bullet : .224, 77, Sierra HPBT MatchK 9377

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.

Matching Maximum Pressure: 55000 psi, or 379 MPa

or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 105 %

These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

I've worked up my load with a chrony.
1/7 twist, 20" hbar

2520 - 26.6gr
62gr wideners milspec fmjbt
3000 fps

2520 - 27.5gr
55gr wideners milspec fmj
3130 fps

these are for all intents 'full case' loads.

last time out, my reference was some Malaysian Mil Reloaded 55gr bullets were an avg of 3130fps also.
New Prvi 55gr run about 3200fps iirc.

Was this out of an AR or a bolt gun? The main issue is since it's a ball powder and burns slower, it could cause the gun to malfunction

I use it for my heavy bullets and for all else picked up a shiload when I could a few years back of the cannister grade AA2200 for all else

Sorry, its an AR15.
Function appears to be fine with this powder. Starting with really low loads, it even functioned down to 2400(75gr) and 2500(62gr) fps ranges.
We've run about 200 rounds so far with this load. Seems good, but I had some brass that would not fit 26.6 gr ! Some old PMP commercial I bought years ago. I'll have to load 75gr bullets in those I think (or recalculate the load for that brass).

Only time I get ftf, or fte is when I use that shit net style cheap brass catcher. It needs work. Luckily I have a really old abs box style brass catcher that has worked flawlessly for years.

I also think 2520 is to slow for lighter bullets, but here is AA data if you want to give it a try.

Good info, just what the OP was looking for. Arrington Accuracy is big on AA2520 for .223, .308 and .30-06. His web site has match loads for all three rounds. As stated earlier, his data is for heavier match bullets in .223. But you may find his .30-06 loads to your liking.

AA-2520 and AA-2460 are excellent powders in .223.

I've tested 2230, 2460 and 2520 in 223, finally settled on 2460, quite frankly the differences were minimal between them, my choice of 2460 was mostly just gut feeling, all of them were extremely accurate in my AR.
