looking for optic on GSG-5 SD

Just picked up a GSG-522 SD and looking for an optic. Considering a Vortex SPARC, another red dot or should I got with a regular scope (maybe 2-7x)? Im new to the .22 scene so Im looking for alittle help. Im leaning towards a tactical set-up over just shooting off a bench. Not sure how far out it will be accurate, but im only looking to shoot targets in a run & gun set-up. Shooting 1" groups is not needed, but would like decent shot placement. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

the red dots of many make will work fine and the reviews on the the vortex brand seem very good get the best you can afford and rember that red dots are for in most cases non magnification so if you are shooting distance then a regular scope would be what you need in most cases a red dot with a bright but small dot will fit the bill. Best of luck with your choice.

Walther MP5 red dot.

Or Primary Arms micro red dot.

If you have a 522 you might have to replace your rail with a smoothe upper receiver piece off the earlier gen GSG-5s but the PA red dot shout work pretty well and is pretty low pro too.

can u post a pic with this mounted on ur SD? I was also looking at their m4 style.
is the 3MOA dot too big? I see the SPARC is only 2MOA.

Sure I'll take a couple after work and post them for you. And the dot isfine for me, this was on my AR before I got my Aimpoint and worked well. I honestly cant tell a difference between the 2 MOA and the 3 on tha PA optic, Also I have nothing against Vortex, (in fact they are a Wisconsin company) I have just never used or seen one, but have heard nothing but positive comments.

I have a Sig Sauer red dot on my GSG-5SD.
http://www.sigsauer.com/SigStore/ShowProductDetails.aspx?categoryid=0&productid=286

Looks great but I'm not exactly sure how to sight it in.

Do you use the red dot in conjunction with the front iron site?
Or do you just use the red dot and zero it accordingly?

The front iron sites are pretty distracting when looking at the red dot.

I am brand new to rifles, especially with red dot optics.

Any info is appreciated.

basically, i use the red dot sight by itself. i dont co-witness it on any of my rifles.
to me, if seems like theres too much going on if im trying to aquire targets quickly using both.

I cowitness on my AR, my BUIS line up in the lower 1/3 of my Aimpoint, however on the GSG-5 my PA red dot is much to high to line up with the irons. I'm taking pics now for you and will post them asap.

I've never seen the Walther MP5 red dot. Is it any good? Looks like a nice fit. You don't have to buy a mount if you use it.

the newer version SD comes with a picatinny rail, so i dont think that Walther red dot will fit.

Correct, all GSG-522's come with the rail. In order to use the Walther red dot you would need to replace your railed receiver cap with part #33 (in the diagram below) from the pre-lawsuit GSG-5's.

I sold mine several years ago when I mounted on my Gen 1. Went with an Aimpoint clone instead.

I got the bushnell TRS-25. I didn't want to spend anything more than that for a $400 gun.

I have a NC Star fastfire lookalike on my umarex mp5. The first one I bought was DOA....they quickly replaced it under warranty. I just came back in from the backyard
sighting it in....kick ass little sight.

I paid $50 for it new at a gun show...I think they retail for $80? It is mounted on an airsoft low rail. In all I have $73 in the sight and mount.

I normally subscribe to the train of thought that you get what you pay for. I expect a limited service life out of this combo, but it is just a plinking gun.

NC Star reflex. 4 different reticles. some overspotting from the red light but for $50-70 its a nice lil optic that holds zero!

I run an EoTech 552 on my GSG5SD. That is an awesome piece of gear. I had one laying about with no home. So I set it up on the GSG and it rocks. Tight group, easy target acquisition, and fast follow-up shots on target. It's not a cheap piece of gear, but its well worth it. The only issue I have is that my scope mout (an NC Star rail mount) sits canted ever so slightly to the right. Its noticeable on the 552 b/c its a larger sight. It doesn't affect the optic or grouping at all, but it pisses e off b/c I notice it. Enjoy the gun, and shot the hell out of it.

I have used this for about a year now and it works great, clear glass, good settings and holds zero.

My 522 has that receiver cap underneath the picatinny rail. The rail is just screwed into it.

I'll be able to verify if there is any difference between the two receiver caps once mine gets here this afternoon.

edit...piece arrived and is identical... minus the holes drilled for the rail screws.

Why did you choose the cantilever mount for the PAM3? Can you see the stock sights under it? I like PA's stuff. Was thinking of the M3 but on the basic GSG basic mount/rail they have which is very low. The sights might show some with the low mount. How hard was it to zero in with the high mount?

Just because it was on another gun previous to this, but for me it really works at the height it is at with the mount. So i have let it be, the Aimpoint PRO is now mounted with an ADM High Profile Mount.

I'm curious as to why you say the #33 part is needed on all 522's?. My recently purchased SD had the plastic rail and that #33 part already. My NcSTAR 1x20mm claw mount red dot looks just like your Walther setup in your picture.

My PA M3 got lost in UPS Hell, so I ordered another one. IT should get here mid week. I hope its high enuff to clear the iron/plastic/whatever material sights.. I wanted to stay low, so I ordered the basic GSG mount and the scope comes with a low mount ring. I hope it works out. I guess the only way to get a cowitness is with the NCstar scope/mount one piece rig? Or the similar Walther?

I have the PA M3 with the included Low Mount on my SD. You can see the front sight quite a bit. But it is a lot lower than the dot itself. Can't see the drum sight at all, definitely no co-witnessing going on. And, it is still low enough that you're in about the same position as you are with the irons. I didn't even notice the front sight in the optic when I was actually shooting.

I got it sighted in yesterday, and worked over a 12 plate rack with it. So. Much. Fun!
