GSG 5 Back From ATI-Range Report
Well, still the same FTE/stovepipe problems with the 'bulk' Fed ammo from wally world-seems my gun just is rather finicky about what it eats. I am going to try a couple more different ammos and see what happens. It was very nice of ATI to work on the gun, and they even re painted several parts including a pretty big nick in the paint on the front sight. The ejector plate came back nice and tight also-it has about 1/32-1/16" play in it when I had sent it back. Looks like a new rivet was installed. Thank you Ray!
Just for fun I am also going to try disassembling the magazines to make sure no grit etc (range is all sand) has accumulated in them to rule that possibility out.
did you send your mags with the gun so they could be tested also? What was your repair tag number. Every gun is tested before it ships out.
Hi Ray, the ATI test sheet showed 44 rounds run through the rifle with no problems-unfortunately I did not send my 4 magazines in with it. I was able to fire one 22 round magazine just fine, then the problems started again no matter which mag was used. I just finished thoroughly cleaning the gun, and will try some CCI ammo next-seems this gun does not like the cheap Federal-at least that is what I am hoping. I tried the CCI before, but will give it another go as well as Winchester Super X if I can find it locally. I'll try anything but lead heads to prevent barrel fouling, as the gun came back with rounds going into the barrel like butter.
The RA was 2609.
Tried the CCI mini mags-same results after one mag. The first round failed to load, but it was smooth sailing for 22 rounds minus one more failure to eject. Reloaded the same mag with the CCI, and the FTF/FTE started and got worse from there (yes, I tried 3 other magazines...same result). My only guess is that this particular rifle needs to be thoroughly cleaned after every 20 rounds or so. Never heard of this, as all of my other guns can blow through 300 or more rounds without a problem. I'm baffled.
Ray, since the gun worked fine at ATI with your factory mags, could it be possible that I have 4 (3 factory new) bad magazines, perhaps? I was also wondering if the bolt return guides could be adjusted out for a slower bolt return to prevent the failure to eject problem. Just throwing ideas out there.
BTW-what mags were you using? I have two unmarked ones, and two brand new GSG 22 round units. I disassembled and cleaned them. When I took them apart, there were copper shavings at the very top of the mags-just under the follower. They were also internally coated in what I assume to be a water based/teflon lube.
Bumped for additional info edited into the previous post.
Never mind-I just sold it.
Last week I had taken apart my magazines and there were also brass or copper shavings in it as just as the OP described.
