need some advice on a gen 2 laser Mod
I have been researching for several days now and am planning to purchase a GSG-5 in the next month. I would like to know the following:
1. What is the difference in a GSG-5, GSG-522, GSG-5SD?
2. Which is more reliable/ less prone to breakdown?
3. Since this purchase will more than likely be a gen 2 or above, I have read several forums and stickies on the laser mod with the MC-74B air soft laser. People have done this mod successfully and unsuccessfully to the gen 2. Can Someone who has successfully completed this mod explain to me how they did it? I do not want to tear up a brand new gun.
Thanks for any and all help, oh also on the top of the mod forum it says I can download an 81 page pdf to explain some of these mods, but when I click the link it has 4 files none of which have anything to do with the gsg. Can anyone shed some light on this or know where I can download it?

I have the 522 (Thanks again GSG

)
the 5 and 522 are based off the Mp5 while the SD is based off of the MP5SD,
the 522 is the version GSG came out with after HK sued them and has noticeable differences from the GSG-5,
Hope that helped with question 1.

Helped a little, and every little bit helps. Anyone got anything on the laser mod or where I can download that 89 page pdf?

I'm pretty sure the laser mod can only be done on Gen1 models that have a threaded end on the cocking tube. You can probably contact ATI and purchase the cocking tube or even use an airsoft part if you can't find a Gen1. I'll see if I can find anymore info for you.
Edit:
HERE is the the write up, I think it's about the 6th DIY into the thread. The complete write up is in there. Below is a pic of a Gen1 FSB and Gen2+ FSB. The laser mod witll only work with the Gen1...

I saw that pic, and I assumed as you did that I would have to have a gen 1 to do this mod. However, I have seen several post on this forum of people that did the mod on gen 2s. Anyone who as or is doing this mod on a gen 2 please post instruction on how to do it correctly
Looks like a cool mod I thought it was just for the gen 1 rifles also if not that would be awesome.
I just picked up a 522SD for $375 out the door at a gun show a few weeks ago. As already stated, the 522 is the exact same receiver and internals as the 5 but with a few cosmetic differences to appease HK’s lawyers. I found that the 522’s are available at quite a discount compared to the old pre-suit GSG-5. I ended up picking up the 522/5 conversion kit for $40 bucks to convert back to the pre-suit look.
I’ve got about 300 rounds through her and she runs great. I like her so much that I was going to pick up the PK too, but I’ve since settled on the 9mm AT-94P for my SBR/suppressor project as I don’t yet own a pistol caliber carbine.
As for as the laser mod goes… from what I've read you could still do it on a Gen2 5 or 522 but you’ll need to cut off/drill the charging/cocking tube end as they don’t screw off on these models. I can tell you that the conversion kits come with the gen2 tubes also. My 522SD tube is metal, as is the 5 tube from the conversion kit. The PK tube from the kit is composite however.
Hope this helps,
Inkog

I've done it on a gen 2 gun. It's not that hard. All you really need is a dremel, step bits and a drill press. I wish I'd taken more pics I'll try to get back later and walk you through it.
that would be great I am going nuts trying to figure this out. Any and all help you can give me would be awesome any pics would be even better
hope you didnt forget about me, still waiting on the instructions to mod this gen 2 for the laser
I'm guessing you have to cut off the front section off the FSB where the laser goes into the cocking tube. Also waiting for full details from anyone that has done this.

Nope, haven't forgotten about you, just been busy re-doing the kitchen for my wife. Tile walls, new counter tops, etc..... =(

I wouldn't suggest doing that. I scribbed an x into mine, then just drilled it out. The thing's hollow. You don't want to go too deep though. Take the laser and measure the part with the threads, that's roughly how deep you want to go with the big bit. After that, measure the part where the batteries go, and drill with a bit, (I can't remember what I used, but I do know it was guessing followed by moving up in bits before I got it right. (It's bigger, but not much then the battery tube. When you put it in, you quickly see how much bigger you have to go, I did. I used a bit that matched the outer diameter of the shell they sent with the laser for the first drill hole. You don't go too deep with it. I dremeled the shell back to the threads, and then dremeled a ring around the center of that. (for a glue/grip area.) I then took the cocking tube and measured inside the hole and dremeled a slight ring inside it. (I used a cut off wheel that I'd worn down a lot on another project, it fit inside well.) Then I coated the ring with epoxy, (I don't think it was needed, s it's pretty hard to press that shell inside because of those bands on the sides, but I did it anyway) It fit inside well, then I just used the same steps the other guy did in the gen one mod, you know, the oring for compression, the file at the bottum for the suppessor, ect, .... Oh, and you do not have to worry about the front site blade, it doesn't get near the hole you drill, and the battery tube at the end won't come near the charging handle either.
Just make sure you hold that cocking tube tightly, like with a leather glove wrapped around with a pipe wrench, or some vice grips or something before you drill, that thing will beat your knucles to death if the bit grabs. But trust me, that fake cap is really thin, so don't push hard with the drill press.
I got a spare cocking tube from ATI so when I go in the woods here, I can put it on and leave the laser home, (damn stupid laws here)
I think I've only got pics of where I started scribing the front cap, after that I got bogged down in the, "nope, wrong bit," and " now how do I get this part stuck in here" and forgot to take the most important pics. But, you can go up to the pic thread, and run back just a few pages, and find mine there. check the pic out, and then compare it to the gen 1 mod and you can see how ti looks just a bit different on the end because I didn't cut off the fake button. I guess it won't hurt to do that, if you want to, but I didn't.
Just drill, fit, and work it in. And get a spare cocking tube for when you can't have a laser
If you zoom in and look at the end, you maybe can see what I mean, after you look at the gen one conversion thread.

Annnnnd, .... I need to update those, I've made some more changes in that, like cut the cord and connected the pressure switch from , ...... ummm, ...... something I had in a drawer here and wrapped it around and stuck it to the side of the pistol grip so i can activate the laser with my shooting hand. (there's three wires in the laser, but only worry about the coated ones.)
Thank you thank you thank you and did i mention... thank you! No worries about the kitchen, those" honey dos" I have them to. LoL
