 Duty Knife / Gift

One of my best friends just became a State Trooper and I want to give him a knife as a gift. I am looking for a knife that will serve him well and is quick to open.
My 10 year old Kershaw Avalanche getting me to think along those lines. I am not bound to a Kershaw speedsafe knife, but as stated above a easy / quick opener is ideal for the type of use he will be subjecting it to.
I am looking at a 3-4 inch folder in the $100 and lower range.
What say the masses? Any suggestions from LEO's / FF on what works for them would be great.

Thanks in advance!

I'd say a ZT 0350. At TKC (here) it is $119 with 7% off with a discount code and free shipping. And it is still a Speed Safe witch is something that I've started to love with my Leek, Black Out, Blur and Shallot that is being shipped.

Most useful knife I carried in 12yrs OTJ was a multi-tool. You can get them now with a quick opening main blade and even a pocket clip. Pliers come in very handy, especially when dealing with IV drug users. As a back-up weapon folders suck. The Ka-Bar TDI is awsome and affordable solution for weapons retention if properly trained.

+1 on the multi-tool. Also another thing to consider is something like the Gryphon M10. A small fixed blade with a great sheath. I carry one under my gun belt behind my radio at a slight angle. Its not obvious, accessible with either hand (if need be) and its faster than a folder. There are autos too. The Protech TR3 is pretty popular with law enforcement.

I agree a good multi-tool is your best thing that will get the most use, they probably come in more handy than a folder.

The HEST 2.0 is the best folder new folder design I have seen in ages. A multi tool might be more useful but not as cool! All the younger cops around here have pocket clip type folding knives, usually cheap stuff

I think in the northeast most departments would have a shit fit if you had a fixed blade knife on you-although they are more practical under stress. I had a m10 years ago but I think TSA stole it, great little knife

I worked a fancy pants suburb and then the PJ's in NE Ohio. Suburb actually sent me to the TDI Police Knife Defense Class. PJ's didn't say much about the TDI since several of the SWAT guys carried blades on thier drop leg holsters. The TDI was very popular. Only real drawback is the shitty sheath. During the class all manner of folders were run head to head versus the TDI. Waved, assisted openers and switchblades. Nothing was as fast or positive to deploy as the TDI.
