TOPS knives?
Anybody have any opinion on them? Quality durability? stuff like that
I have the Tom Brown Tracker, beast of a knife.
They are a lot heavier than they look. Quality is there, I'm just mystified as to why they weigh as much as a cinderblock
...or cost 100 to 150 more than they need to...
as other people said, they cost maybe a bit more than they should be. with that being said, i have 4 tops knives and like them all. They are built like tanks, hold a good edge and i prefer their sheaths over my esee sheaths. my favorite TOPS i have is the idaho hunter, as it is my field knife when hunting. alot of them are in the "tacticool" category but i like them . If there is a design you like, get it, you wont be dissapointed, they are really great knives.
I have the Tom Brown Scout and I love it. I think the ESEE is the best values, but my tops is unique.
Good stuff because I too have been thinking about grabbing one, nice to read from some that use them.
Thanks for the info guys!
I have their Black Rhino with the micarta scales. It's a very dramatic style. A Beast? Yeah, that's about right.
It weighs what it weighs because it is solid, thick steel from the tip to the pommel and is a fairly large knife. Speaking of pommels, I would not want to get hit with the pommel of the Rhino.

Dunno, I swear they fill those things with molten lead. Higher-end knives have spoiled me, I guess.

That sounds like a bit of snobery and an unwarranted put-down of TOPS owners. Am I misreading you?
I've carried the Black Rhino for a week-long hiking trip and never once felt burdened by it. The sheath is very functional and secure, too. I don't like the aesthetic of Kydex but it is superbely functional. Leather is much more vulnerable to damage.

Yeah sounds like you are. Not putting the owners down at all, i had a lot of their older pieces, and still have 3 ot 4 but their stuff from the past 2 years just feels heavier. than it looks..it looks like it should weigh 13 ounces but weighs 24 ounces and lacks a balance point. The thing is, I don't know why. I have knives made from all the tool steels, carbon steels, stainless...the weight ratio reminds me of a truck spring camp knife I made 15 years ago. Jusrt making an observation, didn't mean to insult you or your choice of cutlery.
I hate kydex as well, but it works on these knives.
