M2-Sling mounted, over the shoulder ammo, offhand...possible?
Got a local buddy that wants to try and rig up a sling, over the shoulder ammo and some sort of sling so he can walk around with his M2 (full, not semi).
Ideas? Links?
Suggestions?

Nevermind.
Um, take video?

Given the nature of my job (sit around and watch walls for 8-12 hours every day) I've actually given this considerable thought. Set the gun up to feed from the right, link 200 rounds in a backpack and set up something like
this to feed it to the weapon. Hold the weapon tilted 90 degrees to the left and attach a sling from the butterfly grip to the barrel heat shield. I also suggest rigging up some form of grip (like the front grip on a chainsaw) to the heat shield. Maybe even a hip pad to brace the weapon on your thigh/hip.
Ammo feeds from the top, cases eject to the right, links eject down.
If the Russians can do it, we can too.

the M2HB is a recoil operated gun... I don't think anyone could hold it firmly enough to get more than one shot off before it would fail to feed...
The Korg is gas operated, so that wouldn't be an issue with that gun.
I have seen 1919a4 conversions with backpack ammo carriers that work very well...

I strongly suspect it could be fired one round at a time, but it's almost guaranteed to have a failure-to-feed due to the need for a hard surface to recoil against. Actually doing it wouldn't be that difficult, but firing in full auto (if it would even function) would be extremely difficult to control due simply to the size.
I usually don't post a gd style responses in the tech forums but, did I just enter the Twilight Zone

Something like that after 3 to 4 rounds, would probably put me on my back looking skyward.

It wouldn't work because the M2 is recoil operated. It would be like the mother of all limp wristing.

It's ok.
My buddy is serious about trying this.

If you read the book "Seven Roads to Hell" about the Battle of the Bulge by Donald Burgett, he tells about a rather large and beastly 101st. Airborne paratrooper
who used a handheld M2HB firing from the hip at one point during the battle. I forget the exact story, but it is in the book. So evidently it can indeed be done.
If your friend is big and strong enough, he may be able to pull it off.

He's big, the second part ... not so much.

Yes it is possible. Saw it done with my own two eyes. However i do Not recomend, as keeping the muzzle pointed down range is not really going happen. Sling used was a cargo strap run from the spade grips over the shoulder and back down to a hole in the front trunnion/receiver extention or whatever its called.

Did it run FA or was it one-shot-jam?

Can't see it happening more than a shot or 2. The M2 is too damn big and ungainly.
He had about a15 round short belt hanging off the gun. Big ol" Samoan dude, firing 2 to 3 round bursts. Was funny as hell until some one in the tower actually noticed what was going on. The range safety really got his ass ate out for letting it happen. As far as ftf's, i honestly dont remember. This was in '91or '92. Was qualifying the m-60's on paper and some one decided to drag the two fifties out and burn up some ammo the no one wanted to turn back in. That whole day turned into a big screw off sesion. I dont think anyon e qualified on anything, but we did burn up a few pallets of 7.62 and .50cal. Oh, the good old days.
