Need a scope for an Armalite AR-50
I have a friend who purchased an Armalite AR-50. He got a used (i know what your gonna say) scope for it. We were able to get it on-target within 1 inch at 100 yards. When we moved out to 200 yards, it wouldn't even hit a standard-sized piece of poster board (ballistically it should have been witin 2 inches of the point of aim). Both of us are thinking it's the scope so he wants to get a new one. His budget it $1000. Any ideas/suggestions?

A few questions. What makes you guys think it's the scope? When you say: "on-target within 1 inch at 100 yards", do you mean you were shooting 1" groups with it? Was it grouping consistently at 100 over more than a couple of shots? When you had trouble at 200, did you try at 100 again and if so, did it still shoot well? Did you make any adjustments to the scope, base, rings, etc between 100 and 200? What kind of scope is it?
There could be a problem with the scope, but there could very easily be something else wrong. With more info, maybe someone here can help you out before he has to drop the cash for a new scope.
Nothing wrong with used scopes, so long as you buy the right ones!
Good luck,
Erik

A detailed description about the exact process you took would help including a rang description ie back stop in correlation to target if their is one.

They work. Take your pick.

I have a nightforce on mine but alot of people run the Leupolds mark 4 on them. I have both and you get what you pay for sure.
Did you mean you were getting 1" groups at 100 yards, or getting a 1" radius of shots around your POA?
Note: Re-read your post. It sounds like while sighting in, you got the scope within 1" of POA then moved out to 200 yards. There's a few factors.
#1. Maybe the scope went bad. Have you checked it again at 100 yards?
#2. At 100 yards, you maybe have it shooting too high/low at 200 yards?
#3. Can you consistantly group? Just saying. The first 20 rounds or so I still had the pre-.50 jitters in hearing about "bad recoil" and it took a few dozen rounds to get used to the fact it wasn't that bad
However to answer your original question:
SWFA Super Snipers are good. I've got a Bushnell Elite 3200 on mine, plan on getting a SWFA SS early next year. However my Bushy 3200 has held up to 180 rounds so far.
Take it back to 100 and see if it still shoots to within that 1" of POA. If it does, the scope is not at fault.
