Just a bit of humor, or at least I thought it was funny.
Due to some fudds shooting on the 300 and 600 yard lanes, we have been having some problems with bullets leaving the range. So, our club (Bench Rest Rifle Club) has instituted a rule that you can not shoot over 200 yrds, unless you have proven you understand ballistics and can make the correct adjustments for 200, 300 and 600 yards. So, you actually have to demostrate this with 3 shots at each range. If you fail you have to attend a class and then try again. I didn't fail but figured I might learns some new tricks. So, while talking to the club prez about my attending this Sunday. He asked what rifle I would be shooting. I said that the only rifle that I have that is up to the task, is my 50BMG rifle. He's like "Oh Shit"!! I am sure that the other class mates will traumatized from the concussions and blast, and wont be able to shoot after me. LOL Might be able to recruit a few more 50BMG owners after they see what this bad boy can do.
I just had a day dream about how funny it would be if some crotchety old dude showed up and out shot you with a .45-70 at 800 yards.
Maybe if the old guy used to be in a mortar crewman lol

Creedmore matches used to be shot all the time with black powder .45-70 and the like. Drop at 1000 is somthing like 150 feet I believe.
http://home.earthlink.net/~sharpsshtr/CritterPhotos/SandyHook/SandyHook.html <–––––– 2 mile shots w/ .45-70.
My 45/70 Shilo Sharps with a 522 gr cast bullet has 132' drop at 1000 yards and the Baldwin Soule sight has the adjustments to match it.
I don't shoot it often enough though and have to Chronograph it and plot the drop every time I shoot.

Ya, that would be funny. But dont think it would happen.. I dont suppose you own a 50 BMG do you? Such statements like yours is usually from someone who is envious of someone else who have something that the person that is envious would like to have too.

Only issued a few (M-82A1, M-2), never owned one, although I do shoot my buddies M99 every once in awhile.
So no, it's not so much envy, so much as a knowledge of pre-1900 1000 yard target shooting, experience with .50 bmg rifles and machine guns, and taking into account the Club Presidents statement, which I'm sure he made jokingly, that led me to the aforementioned day dream.
Plus, why would I be envious of owning a 50 if it's "sure that the other class mates will traumatized from the concussions and blast" whenever I shoot it?
I always tell people who are mesmerized from the guns` blast to stand behind me, as that is the best place to be to avoid the serious Oooomph the muzzle generates. Most seem to want to stand to my right or left in the direct path of the muzzle brakes gasses.

Once the thing goes off, I see the Twilight Zone spinning hypnotic disc look in their eyes and offer them a try by putting a round in their hand!

Once they fire it, they`re hooked!!!!
ETA Being on a bench next to one can be a little irritating. I try to be nice and let them know when I am ready to fire. Many times I will wait & let them shoot their groups before I work on my groups. Has been productive so far.
Frankly I am much like Xringlover. And before it became a rule. I would sit at the far end of our 60 bench range. But you know what? Even if you are not caught in the blast. The report is still quite a bit loud. I usually will take off a day from work and go out to the range when there is only a hand full. Cause another guy who owns a 50 and sat for hours (so I am told) at the 100 yrd range and rattled the guys shooting 22LR, practicing for the up coming ARA comp. There was some complaining and now the rule is 50s are only welcome on the 60 bench range. Last 4 or first 4 benches only (1st 4 good to 600 yrds and last 4 good to 200 yrds).
I have tried to understand how others feel about the blast. Yet some concessions need to be made so that I too can shoot. Ya, my first post in this thread was tongue in cheek. Xring reminded me of something. A 50BMG is like EF Hutton. When a 50 speaks, everyone's head turns and googles what made such a report. And if you go back and look at the thread about why did you buy a 50? You will see both myself and many others of us are good will ambassador by letting others get a chance to fire a 50BMG free of charge. Hey you do realize what a round cost right? Well I am not some well paid doctor, lawyer or sport athlete. Just some blue collar making under 100K, just under that is.
Ok, so I have not shot a machine gun version and ya, would be fun. But I still think your envious cause you do not own one..

Haven`t laughed this hard all day!
"The report is still quite a bit loud."
I have to agree. One range I have shot at in the past, you can hear the report echo across the hillside for quite a distance. On the last trip out, I was attracting folks who lived nearby and also members who were going into the lodge where the range was located. They were all wondering what was going on. I was going for groups and shot about 30 rounds or so. Not something that you shoot very fast and then are done and go home. We`re talking spending 1 to 2 hours or so on the line. No one else around me. I was it. Taking my time and enjoying a bit of privacy with my piece. Uh no. Not that piece you poor heathens! Get your minds out of the gutter!

When you are on a line full of folks, it can be a little trying. I try to have patience. Works out for the best. A couple of months ago, I was at a range with a friend. Some LEO`s came in for their annual pistol qualification time. I think they spent more time with me and my buddy than they did practicing with their pistols!

They were taking cell phone pics of each other behind the rifles! Great guys to be around I have to admit! Hope to see them again on the range soon! Dad blasted moochers!! I think they had more fun that afternoon than me and my buddy did!!

And for those that are a little skeptical or pessimistic of LEO`s...... No. They didn`t photo my piece or me to be put in some file somewhere as a non subservient peasant.

Ahh, I get it, people that don't have brand X must be envious of those that do?
I'm sort of the opposite, I feel happy for people that have things they want.
If I wanted a .50 cal rifle, I'd sell my .22 and get one (but it would be a .50 Alaskan Model 71 to match the Original 71 I have).
Well its like this madcap,
I was able to by just listening to the tone of your post, deduct that you did not own a 50 BMG rifle. So, you have a different mind set than one who does own said type of rifle. I have also read that those who dont own a brand X as you put it. Tend to make negative remarks to someone who does own the Brand X item. Sorry, but your response is typical and thus I was able to deduct your status.
I grow tired of your chatter madcap. Good bye.

The tone of my post was in jest, people that have a sense of humor would have laughed and said "yea, that would be pretty funny".
But I suppose if someone had a self righteous pride of ownership, they would see anything as an attack.
I believe it was the late Dr Freud that said;
Lighten up Francis.

Now that it's cooled off, it's time to take the 50 and really run it through the ringer and bust some rocks at 1000 yards. I've never had the chance to shoot it on a regular range as most of my shooting is done from my front porch. To do the 1000 yard thing I've got a place near Mangum Ok where I can shoot as far as I want without bothering anyone.

LOL I love breaking rocks. Last time we took my buddies M99 out we were hitting boulders with API. Unfortunately in W. Wa there's no where to shoot, so we just went on to see how large of rocks we could break.
Rocks are great when plinking with 50 Cal API. You can see the flash and if they are big enough you don't have to worry about fires. When I was stationed at Pope AFB the Fayetteville Cross Creek Long Rifles Club had a great big chunk of sandstone at 50 yards. That was our dangerious game rock where folks would test the function of their big dangerious guns. To make sure of no FTF of any kind. With the sand stone you could see the dust of a hit from anything from .22 to .458 Winchesters. For me I did a lot of shooting it with my Marlin 1895 45/70. The rock was about the size of a Buffalo and after several years of getting shot it finally got shot in two. I had a lot of great times there but it was before anyone had heard of Ronnie Barrett.
We had a bunch of .50 SLAP rounds overseas, and it would cut through the sand stone bricks like NOTHING.
