So, I have a Shrike, and I got to thinking,
Is it possible/legal to manufacture a beltfed .308 upper that would work on a RR, RDIAS, or RLL? Just wondering. I mean, shouldn't it be legal? I know that I would snap one up fast if there was one.

I'm sure. As long as it still uses the AR15 lower, yes it's just another caliber upper...just like the 9mm ones and 5.45 ones, and Beowulf ones.
I want a Shrike. I'll pick one up at the end of the year hopefully. Production is rolling smoothly right?
It'd be legal as long as the ATF doesn't determine that it's a self contained firearm like the belt fed 8mm upper. IOW, if it can't be fired on it's own, then it's good. If it can fire without the AR lower, no go.
Just to clarify, even if it fires on its own (like the 8mm) it's still legal as a semi-auto, just not with a registered conversion device.
Yeah, when I started shopping around, I found quite a bit. Parts are getting easier to get too from what I understand.
I can see a couple of possible problems with this idea. First, Geoff Herring has a patent on belt-fed conversions that turn an AR-type rifle into a belt-fed without modifications to the receiver. Second, since the .308 is longer than the .223 you might have a problem getting enough travel in the bolt before it runs out of room in the receiver.
7.62X39 would be easier from a design standpoint, I think. This is one area (convertible belt-feds) where the HK guys have it better. With a Michael's Machines 23E (.223) you can convert over to .308 quickly and easily although it ain't cheap. Mike is supposedly working on a 7.62X39 version also.

The problem is that the .308 won't work in the normal AR mag well. The reason the shrike is kosher is because you can feed it from the normal mag well and it works. You could make a beltfed for the AR10 platform, but of course no one would really have much interest in that. Well, they might, but you wouldn't really have a full auto option for that.

Will a LL run in a AR10?

The ATF has deemed its a different weapons platform, so even if you could make it work, it would be a post sample.

Would a RLL in a MGI lower with a .308 magwell be a post sample?

That and the new colt 901 are kind of a grey area. I don't know what they would say about it, but I wouldn't want to be the first one to try, nor would I want to write them a letter to get a decision on it. I'm sure someone will before too long, and then we'll know. Or at least have an idea. Till they deem it other wise. I haven't seen the inside of the 901. But that would be interesting to know.
