How does the tri burst work? (dumb question of the day)

Hi Fella's,
I want to state that unless I win the Lotery I will never have the pleasure of owning a M16, but I have allways wonder how the Tri burst worked. I saw in the for sale forum that there was a guy selling what I think was a double hook disconnetor?? And I hope that someone would explain how it works i laymans terms?? I have allways been curious about full auto's and 25 years ago I bought a Big book called Small Arms of the world and found a ton of info and the break down of the M16 and how the full Auto worked but nothing on the Tri Burst.
If anyone has the time to reply I would be great full.

That's an interesting diagram. When firing the M16A2 in semiautomatic mode, I find that the trigger pull is extremely heavy and inconsistent. It seems that you would basically have 6 different pulls based on which surface of the burst cam you were on. Correct?

That is a tricky question.

I believe that there would be two different trigger pulls. One for each "Stop Notch". The other notches are used to "count" the number of rounds that have been fired.

Now if you let go of the trigger and only one or two rounds were fired, then you would have the trigger pull of that particular notch.

So the official answer would be 6, but the 2 "Stop Notches" should be the two main trigger pulls.

FYI: This is only for the M16 only. The H&K 3rd firing mechanism is totally different.

But in semi mode, you only fire one round per pull (obviously). So you would stop on each notch, giving 6 different places to stop. To me, this is a serious design flaw. If soldiers are encouraged to use semi and aim their shots, they need a decent trigger pull to be accurate. The original M16 trigger only gives one trigger pull, regardless of how many rounds are fired. It's still heavy, but at least it's consistent.

Ya, I guess your right. I am not sure about the semi-mode.

I have a M16 RR, but just have full auto parts in it. I have never had the desire to get a 3 round burst kit. I can just do a quick trigger pull and get 3-4rds to go. Plus I will always have the same trigger pull.

MP15T,
Thank you so much. Such a simple thing but I couldn't get it in my head how it worked, but now i know! I have been wanting to go to a Machine gun shoot that is close to me, but everytime the event came up I couldn't find anyone to push my wheel chair around, I traded around and now have a power wheel chair and all that is left to do is figure how to haul it, and I am off to the shoot!!! I know it cost to shoot those guys and gals guns but if someone has a M16 there with a Tri Burst I might spend the money to shoot it. I would like also to shoot a full auto but I think that you pay to shoot so many rounds and the tri Burst would make me think I got more shooting than on full auto I you don't but I think it would make you think so??
Thanks again for the info!

Ace, where are ya located (city/state)? Lots of folks here are willing to let newbies shoot their MGs for free. They are like me –– they love seeing that first-time Full Auto Grin.

Tony,
I live in the S.E. corner of Kansas. In 2007 or 2008 we became a Class 3 state Back before 1986 I could of owned some MG's but I wasn't smart enough to try and get a Class 3 FFL Back then the prices of MG's were at a price range that even low income folks could buy them. The bill they passed help some people because of the increase in there values but put me totaly out of the game! I do have plans to buy a legal Mac or a Sten if I can ever save $3500.00-$4500.00????? If we would of become a Class 3 state in 2002 I would of had the cash to buy a MG of some kind Not a M16 but maybe a Uzi or something better than a Mac!
In 2003 I destoyed my back, tore L3,L4,L5 but do to my income at that time I just poped pain pills after pain pills and worked up until Dec 2007 at that time I was taken off work and cannot ever have a job, do to this I have sold off My harleys and my vette and other things just to keep my head above water!! W.C. laws need to be changed.
There were some folks that had a little private MG shoot at a Range in Oklahoma City, I would of love to of went because several of those guys told me I shoot theres, it is a 4 hour drive down there and i can't even ride that far let alone drive. I would love find someone close that would let me shoot there MG I do have 9mm,45acp,5.56 ammo to supply for shooting, I wouldn't think of mooching off of someone that was kind enough to let you play with something I will never ever have the chance to do. They have a shoot once a year that isn't very far from me, but I think it cost $100.00 to shoot one and if I did that my wife would kill me!
I guess I could sell off all of my guns and buy a Mac but I realy can't justify doing that, I have sold off all my hunting guns.
Tony if you no anyone in my area that would not mind me showing up with ammo to shoot with them.
Much great full for all the help.

Ace,

Where in SE Kansas do you live? There is another Oklahoma MG shoot that's closer than Oklahoma City. It's called the FAST –– Full Auto Shoot and Trade show.
Oklahoma FAST

Hopefully, I'll have an MG in the next 6 months to 1 year. If I do, you're welcome to come up to KC and shoot it.

Mac,
That is a show that I have tried to go to for the last to years but I have been unable to find someone to go with me and help with my wheel chair, I have traded for a powered chair and now all I have to is figure out how to haul it, can't afford a $1000.00 carrier!! I live in Labetta County and that shoot is only 40 miles from my home. If you do get a MG and you wouldn't mind me coming up and shooting with you I got ammo!! I havn't given up on owning a Mac or a Sten someday, I just can't justify spending that much money based on my income. I have a great wife but when it come to spending that much, a MG isn't close to the top of things to buy!!
Can't wait to talk, I hate this weather another 6" of snow, i havn't been out of the house for 10 days or so.

Ace,

We try to have shoots up here near KC as often as we can. Last shoot I went to have an MP5SD, an AR45 (with RDIAS), and a Mac of some kind. Then suppressors galore.

I'll shoot you an IM the next time we have a shoot and you can swing on up if you've got the chance!
