What type of ammo to safely use in an AOW shotgun?

I've got a line on a Remington 870LM AOW with a 10" barrel. What type of ammo do you guys recommend for range practice and self defense? I'd rather not break my wrist trying out different kinds of ammo :)

If you use the correct technique, you can shoot anything up to heavy slugs!

Speaking of technique, what's the right way to aim these things? From videos, I see people holding it at the mid-body, but that's not aiming. And sighting it too close to your face seems to be a recipe for getting smacked in the head.

The proper technique for such a weapon is...

Shoot from eye level, sight down the barrel, weapon fully extended at arms length. With strong hand (trigger hand) PULL back, with support hand PUSH forward. Like you are trying to stretch the gun.

I also shoot them like a handgun.

I don't shoot mine like that...I must not be doing it right.

I shoot anything that fits in my chamber. Bird shot, buck shot, 3" slugs... Even a firestorm round (which was not impressive out of an AOW... it didn't fully ignite).

I shoot it one handed most of the time while using lighter loads. While trying to aim (which by the way, is damn near impossible with such a short barrel... You aren't going skeet shooting with these things), I hold it up with both arms so that I have a clear view over the barrel. Mine has no sights on it anymore, so I just get it in the general direction. While having fun, I'll hold it at hip/mid body level.

The idea for me, is that I won't be shooting much past 15 feet anyways with this thing. It's a very nimble home defense gun with a huge punch to clear a hallway.

I had this 8" Mossy since 1990 and put over 3K rounds down the tube. The key to comfort is the Pachmayr Vindicator pistol grip. Solid rubber, it takes the shock, not your wrist. As for ammo, you name it, I've shot it. I have used cheap low base dove loads for FAST shooting however. HTH

Triggerfish..where did you get the MP5K foregrip? I want a Serbu fore end, but can't find one that isn't attached to a shotgun

The builder of the AOW machined a steel block and then attached the plastic grip to it. He has been out of business since '95.

Birdshot is fun. I've shot reduced recoil slugs & 00 buck, and it felt like a load of #6 shot. I also aim hip level and am decently accurate from about 10-15 yards.
