Best Self Defense load for a 14.5" Short Barrel Shotgun?
Best Self Defense load for a 14.5" Short Barrel Shotgun?
No choke, just cut off barrel.
I like Number 4 Buckshot, but mine are loaded with tactical (low recoil) OO buck because I'm having a hard time finding low recoil Number 4 The old shoulder isn't what it used to be.
And mine are 14 inch if we are being picky.
Low recoil 00 buck usually patterns pretty well. You could also try Nobel Sport's 12 pellet 2-3/4" 00 buck, but it's a little more stout in recoil.
Federal 00 with flight control wad.
I use Ranger Low Recoil 00 Buck. 14" no choke barrel.

+1. It patterns very tightly
1 oz. slugs.
May not like my answer, but it depends and only the barrel can decide. I qual about 30 people annually with seemingly identical 12" Remington 870s and Tactical (low recoil) Federal 00. You would not believe the variance in pattern with the same load and ammo lot. Pattern the same guns with #4 buck and there is no correlation between the two. One gun in particualar shoots like 4-5" patterns with the Tactical patterns like 8-10" with the #4. Other barrels shoot the #4 tight as a drum. I finally threw up my hands and get both and leave it to officer choice based on how THEIR particular gun patterns.
I'll have to second the above post. The only way to determine the best load for YOUR shotgun is to pattern it. A particular brand or load that works wonderfully in 99.9% of all shotguns is not guaranteed to work well in yours.
