will they bust/signal when hitting the ground or do they need to hit a hard target, when shot? TIA
Signal when they hit the ground...
I've had quite a few that have not broken the blue plastic nosecones. It happens, and if you hit a hard traget it is less likely to happen.

I have had them skip without breaking at distance, especially if it's dirt or sand.
Always best to hit something perpendicular.
Interestingly I have had them always break when shot into water and the chalk cloud looks really cool.
If they don't break on impact, you can reload them and shoot them again. I usually hope they don't break. Saves me a windshield and chalk... GROG
