I seem to remember reading that smoothbore muzzle loaders were Non- DD. Is that correct?

I want an old pre-1900's style cannon or mortar.

IIRC if they fire non-fixed ammo they are GTG.

ETA fixed ammo = cartridge. Brass casing, primer, bullet and powder in a single package.
Non -fixed = separate bullet & primer.

Soo, could I have a breech loading rifled barrel that uses powder bags (Battleship deck gun style)?

You can build a breech loading gun firing smokeless and as long as it's non-fixed ammo, you're ok.

It's all about the fixed ammo.

Fixed ammo? It's a firearm.

Not fixed ammo? Not a firearm.

Yup. We should create a "whatzit?" flowchart.

1. Can it take a fixed cartridge?

If no, it's not even legally a firearm.

If yes, it could be a firearm. Go to question #2.

2. Was it made before 1898?

If yes, it's not legally a firearm because it's an antique under the Gun Control Act of 1968.

If no, it's a firearm. Go to question #3.

3. Etc., etc., etc.

The yes and no are swapped on your rifled barrel less than 16" IF-ELSE.
