Broken latch on AAC 762-sdn-6
Anybody running an AAC rifle can ever have a latch fail?
Mine did.
I use it on three different rifles and it gets used between one to two different rifles on a weekly basis. Not a whole lot of rounds through it, just small sessions of maybe 50 rounds or less with maybe a couple thousand rounds through it. It does get put on and taken off almost daily.
Anybody know how long this takes to fix? They are closed today so I can't call until tomorrow.
Fail as in broken in half? Or the teeth are getting rounded?
Pictures?
Sorry, rounded teeth on the actual latch.
Same thing happened to my 762sd. I believe it took 4 weeks door to door.
I just ordered a 762-SDN-6 a month ago (still not even pending...wtf?), but I've seen a few threads mentioning rounding off the teeth.
Do you hold the latch down when screwing on the suppressor? I've heard this greatly helps with rounding off the teeth.

No, but I will now!

When my M4-2000 gets approved I plan to do this from the start.

Well I will say even though this has happened I am 100% satisfied with my can. I'm spoiled even. I don't want to go back to shooting loud rifles! Damn it!

I don't and you shouldn't have to.
It's supposed to be a quick mounting can. That isn't quick.
I have an SDN6 myself, and I don't hold the latch. If it wears out, I'll be upset and I'll send it back, but I won't ever hold the latch. That's bullshit that one would have to do that IMO.

I agree. However, I don't install/remove suppressors daily though. They're always mounted on a rifle and usually the ones that I use the most. I haven't taken the one off my hog hunting AR that it's on now in months.....maybe even a year.

You should remove it and see the funk thats growing on the mount.

AAC has already contacted me and I am awaiting my RMA and prepaid shipping label. I was told that they were trying for 2 weeks on latch repair.
This issue seems to be happening rather frequently. Anyone have any clue as to the serial number range that this is prone to (or is it random, the latch will just eventually round out)? I'm about a month away from a M4-2000, and I don't really want to hold the latch down every time I put the can on.

Oh I know. I damn near welded a thread on can to a barrel once.

I would really like to know if there is a serial number range too!! I just finally recieved my SDN-6 and am going today to try it out! Really don't want to hold the latch either....

pisses you off to put oil in a car too I guess.
It's what needs to be done, so do it. It's not that hard to figure out.

Sorry, but that's one of the worst comparisons I've ever seen.
My car wasn't designed to run with no oil now was it?

It doesn't need done. AAC had some bad latches that were not heat treated properly. If you were unlucky enough to get one then holding the latch button down will extend its life...but ultimately it's going to wear eventually. I'd rather it wear out in the first couple of years when their employees still remember that batch of "bad latches" instead of prolonging the wear issue and trying to get it done 10 years from now. Not saying AAC wouldn't take care of you then...but they may just say it's "normal wear" for a can that old.
I've been pushing the button on mine and have 0 wear on the mount or the teeth on the latch. However, I am seeing some wear on the spring which gets pushed into the mount when you hold the latch open during mounting. I'm going to try mounting without holding the latch down for awhile and monitor the latch teeth instead, and see for myself if my latch got the heat treatment.

That's exactly what I'm going to do once I get my can as well. I'd rather know the latch didn't get the heat treatment and send it back if need be.
