Guys,
I'm looking to get into something with a little more punch then my .223 AR15 and I'm looking at .308 bolt action rifles. I was fairly well set on the Remington 700 SPS but as I get closer to the purchase I am becoming less sure. Does anybody have a recommendation for a good quality rifle for about $700ish?

Thanks

The 700 sps tactical is a decent value.

AAC-SD 700 is a good value too.

depends on what you want it for and why

The remington 700 is like the AR of the 308 bolt guns because it has lots and lots of different stocks and accessories so you can mod it up the way you like

I prefer the remington model 7 action because it is smoother but it has very little accessories

The Savage is the best bang for the buck and very accurate.

Since I know there will be alot of advice to get the Remington, I'll suggest a different path. A Winchester Model 70 shadow in 308, the reintroduced controlled round feed. Admittedly, this will only have a sporter barrel, and I would change out the plastic stock with a basic walnut or laminated one from Boyds (just my personal feeling) . But this will give you a very reliable and practical field rifle, with suitable accuracy for intermediate ranges. For putting larger numbers of rounds downrange on paper, the heavy barreled versions from Remington or Savage would be more suitable, but the sporter barrel on the 70 will still hang in there for 3 or 4 shots before the barrel shifts from getting too warm. But it will be much more portable in actual use in the field. The build quality on these new Winchesters is very good. If you later either wear this one out, you can always send out the action for a rebarrel.

You simply CAN'T go wrong with a Remington 700 SPS or Savage 10FP. Both rifles have plenty of after-market parts, such as stocks, that you can upgrade to as money and time allow. Both rifles have a proven track record and both are quite capable of great out-of-the-box accuracy (1MOA or less on some occasions).

Seems to be plenty offered in the EE all the time.

i can only give advice from the platforms i own and shoot

REM700 PSS - i have right at $700 without Optics / paint / bling / etc (side note - the glass cost more than the boomstick)

Steyr SSG - over the $700 mark but it is a tack driver (the REM700 is also)

do you have a specific application in mind for the rifle?

long range (800meters and above) vs medium range (400-800 meters)?
- if 400-800 meters is the AO - have you thought about an AR10 type platform?

Perscision (boom - headshot) vs rapid engagment (zombie horde)?

That's a good point. Most of what I'm looking at this for is hunting of deer and the like. I might end up using it for zombies just to keep them at a distance, but I've got other weapons for close quarters.

I have a 700VS and it has done me good, very accurate and not terribly expensive.

It's easier to find what you want with the 700, however barrel changes are easier with the 10FP.
I currently have the 10FP and my next will be a 5R 700.

I completely forgot about the Tikka T3.

One of the best actions out there.

Aftermarket parts kind of suck.

REMINGTIN 700 SPS IS A TOP PERFORMER SUB MOA RIFLE JUST DON'T SKIMP ON MOUNT RING AND GLASS.

$700 AROUND HERE OR IN SD CAN ALSO GET YOU A USED FNAR WHICH IS ANOTHER TOP PERFORMER SUB MOA OR BETTER 308.

semi for a few bucks more maybe appealing. Sounds like you have it figured out the sps is one great rifle.

the HOWA 1500 has a good reputation for rifles in that price range. I didn't like the angle of the trigger in relation to the factory stock, but many people do. I ended up buying a Stevens 200 and building it the way that I wanted. Even so, I would have been $ ahead and happier if I had just purchased the SPS varmint from the start.

Ruger Gunsite Scout can be had for around $750 new. I have a conventional scope on mine and love it. It's nice because it comes with irons, so you can shoot it until you can get nice glass.

i know it aint no .308, but since you mentioned for hunting deer and keepin zombies from a distance, and knowing you will be hunkering around. should consider the cz carbine in 7.62x39, could be had for less than $700 bucks super light/single set trigger/magazine fed/ cheap ammo to shoot. heck if your good as hickok45, you should have no problems takin deer and zombies at 230 yards using iron sights

sorry cant seem to load video, could be found on youtube=cz 527 at 230 yards

Savage makes rifles that are absolutely the best bang for the buck. Excellent triggers, but occaiasionally need to have their barrels floated.

The Savage is on my short list when funds permit,as I'm wanting a bolt 308 also. The Remington is nice but for some reason the Savage is calling to me loudly.

Well, at least the Tactical and AAC do since they are the Hogue's. The Varmint model stock isn't very desirable but is way more solid than the Hogue. It's at least usable until you can swing something better.
