Ruger Hawkeye M77
Does anyone have any experience with the above rifle?
I handled a Compact model chambered in 308 a week ago and the rifle shouldered well for me. The trigger wasn't match grade, but would suffice for a hunting rilfe. The action wasn't as smooth as I had hoped for, but perhaps with some lube and a few rounds downrange, it would smooth-out.
I didn't really care for the 16.5" bbl, but I might be inclined to purchase one with a 22" bbl.
I've been looking for a 308 bolt action for a while and I just may have found it.
What are your thoughts on the rifle?
My Gunsite Scout was more accurate than I expected. The action gets smoother every time I shoot it. My average velocity with Federal Gold medal Match is 2547 fps with the short barrel.
I don't have experience with the specific rifle you are talking about, but the GSR is similar.
I have only ever shot one ruger centerfire M77 but my experience with the rifle made me suprised the rifle is not more popular than it is. Good trigger out of the box, controlled feed mauser clone ( probably the best of the bolt actions ) that was more than accurate enough. It was a 22" .270 a friend of mines dad had.
OP I would buy with no reservations, if you do have a problem Ruger has great customer service, they will take care of you.
Oh, and yea I think I would get a model with a longer barrel. At least 20 or 22". A .308 would give up too much from a 16.5" barrel IMO.

My thoughts exactly.
I have a M77 20inch in .30-06. I love the bolt. It's so nice and so smooth. Have some collector rifles from 30's - 50's so nothing new to compare it to. But I have taken some nice deer and coyotes with it. And never failed me yet.
I have a 20" Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger ...... nice gun ............ smooth action, good factory trigger, I like the Hogue stock ..............

I have a Hawkeye African in .223. Work that bolt back and forth. She'll loosen up.
I have a hawkeye sporter in .300 win mag. I love it. The trigger is way better than the older mark 2 triggers, and yeah the action was a little stiff at first but with some time working the bolt it smoothed right out.

My only .308 is a remington 700 SPS tactical, the only thing I dont like about it is that the barrel is only 20". I would rather it be 22". If I ever shoot it enough to have to replace the barrel thats would I would go with, a medium contore 22" barrel.
I have the Hawkeye compacts in 6.8 SPC and 223. Great guns and mine are very accurate. The Hawkeye trigger is alot better than the markII. If I was going with 308 I would buy another compact in a minute. I have several M77s and the bolt will smooth up with use.
One more question, what is your opinion on the Ruger mounts? I have zero experience with them and was wondering if the integral bases provided a solid mounting platform?

I have them on on my Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger and #1H Tropical in 458 WinMag both supporting Leupold scopes and have had zero problems ....... both have "stout" recoil .......

love mine. when i bought mine, i couldve afforded almost any rifle i wanted. but after talking to some hunting guide friends in Montana and Alaska, who are in VERY remote areas, i went with the 77. rugged and bulletproof.

did a trigger job and couldnt be happier.
I've got one in .338 I use for elk. 'Nary a complaint. Rugged and accurate.
I shot a Hawkeye Sporter in 300WMag and was surprised at how well I did with it.
