OT: Clancy's "Act Of Valor" book
Off topic I know.....I picked up a copy of Tom Clancy's Act of Valor book and noticed a reference to an interesting SEAL weapon......Ever heard of a Mk46 .556 submachine gun? Ok, maybe I'm not an expert in SEAL weaponary, but I'm pretty sure this would be a 5.56mm machine gun. MInor detail but I'm surprised it made it through the 2 expert advisers.
Clancy kinda sucks at getting weapon names right.
Anyone remember how in Rainbow Six the MP5/10 was the "MP-10"
Mk46 is the SAW.
Sometimes those are errors of the printer, not the writer.
It is an updated SAW without the mag well. Just pure belt feed mg. MK47 is the 7.62 NATO big brother.
Yeah, Clancy's not the best with terminology.

This was actually written in large part by a gentleman by the name of Dick Couch, and it was likely his mistake. I've had the pleasure of meeting him, and his SEAL days predate the Mk46, so on one hand it's excusable. He's got a great body of non-fiction work, you guys should check it out. My personal favorite of his is "Chosen Soldier," about the selection and training of US Army Special Forces soldiers.

Then why did you post it?
Seems like a minor typo or oopps on the writers part. The weapon exist. I sure hope you guys don't look at the history channel. With all the goofs there it must drive you guys nuts,,

The MK48 is the 7.62.
my unit in afghanistan had some MK48s

one of my AGs in my heavy weapons squad decided to rock one.....I had 2 M240s, 1 MK48 in my squad
we had enough of them to put one in each squad as the bravo team SAW gunner............the supplement to our firepower was devastating to the enemy

I wouldn't sweat it. He or his ghost writers have been slipping lately. I just finished Locked On. Not only has Domingo Chavez always been a sniper, but at one point he shoots a guy with a well placed .45 bullet out of his .40 HK UMP.

I caught that one, too.

The mk47 is a totally bitchin 40mm belt fed. Like a mk19 only betterer because it's got a pretty wicked sight and it's used by SPECIAL FORCES!!! They loaned us one when they saw how often we were getting shot at, and then they refused to replace it when it got shot! The nerve!
Sorry about the typo. I was doing that on my dumb phone.
I finished the book several weeks ago. It reminded me of a cheesy action movie. The A Team could of come up with a better plan at the end of the book. Talk about drama. As already mentioned Tom Clancy only wrote the forward. They needed his name on it to sell the book.

I don't think he's actually written one in decades.
I'm FB friends with his son... I'll ask him.
