Can anyone recommend a good breakdown .308 rifle? You know the ones where the barrel comes off.

HS Precision. I dream about owning one of these babies...

HS Precision makes a great rifle. If you want something you can "take apart" instead of "take down" you could look at the Thompson Center Encore. I also think that Sig made a break down rifle with interchangeable barrels.

HS Precision looks nice. Do the breakdown rifles all break down similar to the HS Precision one? Anything with a nicer, more custom stock?

You can't get much nicer than this www.hsprecision.com/stocks.htm . If by nicer and more custom you mean wood, you could ask them, but I think that you would be better off with the synthetic stock with the aluminum bedding pillar. The synthetic stocks are much less prone to bending/warping when exposed to the weather.

I saw a show about hunting in Africa and one of the hunters took the HS Precision take down rifle with two different barrels and scopes. He could change calibers easily and each rifle still maintained its point of impact.

The Thompson Center Encore has some awesome wood stocks available from www.bullberry.com and other vendors.

The Armalite AR10 takes down into the upper and lower units just like the M16/AR15 if you are trying to store/transport it compactly.

For cheap get an NEF Survivor or Ultra Hunter.

Less than $300 and will do under MOA.

Winchester makes another alternative.

Why does this sound like someone looking for a Hollywood sniper rifle such as in "Absolute Power"?? You know, nice case, barrel has a 1/4 turn fit to look into receiver, scope locks on, silencer threads on, sniper blows on the ammo before putting it into the internal box magazine. I still haven't figured out why they blow on the ammo. Doesn't make any difference when I shoot.

Doesn't help me either, Old Tiger, but I do get better groups when I spit on my thumb and wet my front sight...kinda like D. Boone did.

Hmm, now I need to justify my firearm preferances? Bought a 50 BMG last month because they are nice looking and fun to shoot not because I can kill a semi truck with it.

So to answer your question, yes, I do love those slick looking "hollywood" breakdown sniper rifles.

You'd make Feinstein Proud =)

Thanks to others with helpful suggestions.

Mucor out.

My experience with talking to people who have extensively researched takedown rifles is that none of them compare to the HS. If it is something you really want it is the only way to go.

I refuse to lose any sleep over hurting your feelings. Sometimes we get trolled by under aged wet behind the ears kids looking for strange stuff and dreaming of Columbine High School.
