I lust after some of the high-tech helmet rigs on here but am suffering sticker shock. I know this is an expensive hobby to be in, but after putting down coin for a PVS-14 I am having a hard time justifying another $600-800 for a helmet set up right now, especially given my intended use for this. Maybe in the future, but at the time being I am interested in a stable platform for recreation and maybe night time hunting with an IR laser down the road.
Is it possible to set up a decently stable rig for around $200? My main concern is relative comfort wearing for a couple hours and secure mounting of the monocular. I don't really care how it looks or whether it is made for jumping over fences and running around.
Thanks in advance for the input.
The pasgt helmet with strap mount and j-arm should keep it under $200. Check Egay.
The Ops-Core fast base jump is really the way to go, and is only slightly above your budget. Unfortunately, they also seem to be on backorder for another couple months. If you have a PVS-14, than likely you also have a J-arm, so the only other thing you would need is a USGI rhino, and they can be found quite inexpensively. There really is no need to spend $600-800 on a helmet rig, although some choose to do so.
I am glad the OP asked this question as I am in the same predicament. I am tagging this to read more answers. FWIW, I have been leaning towards the $230 Base Jump helmet, a $35 Rhino arm from ebay and the J arm that comes with the PVS-14. I am not mil or LEO and I won't be running and gunning with the PVS-14 either. Simple recreational use and occasional varmint eradication duties.

+1 The Ops Core is by far the best I used. That being said the PT Alpha is cheap and fairly good. Not an Ops Core but decent and a far cry above most skate helmets. Went the skate helmet route and you end up wasting time and money when you could buy it right the first time. If you can wait and afford the Ops Core, by all means do as it is a great setup. The PT Alpha is not as good but is cheap and well made.
