I am semi new to night vision and understand Gen 3 tubes with the Pinnacle thin film were made for 556. Can they also with stand 308? Whats the night vision option for 308?

You can get WG tubes in Pinnacle and NV riflescopes and clip-ons designed to mitigate recoil.

If you contact TNVC ( link at the top of the page ) I'm sure they can help you with your query - :)

Can I put the PVS-14 ahead of the scope instead of behind it? I was thinking about putting it behind an accupoint 3-9x

You could but it will change the point of impact and again no to using a PVS14 along with a 308.
You must go to a dedicated NV scope/clip on etc-see the second post to get you headed in the right direction.

PVS-14's are not designed to go in front of a dayscope. You can put them behind one, but recoil is an issue and neither the housing or the tubes are designed for it at all.

If you check the original patents on the PVS-14, they did intend for them to be capable of being rifle mounted, but only for M4's and the like. They were never designed for the recoil of larger calibers either for the tube or the housing or the internals of the housing or lenses.

On top of that, the recoil from a 308 exceeds most Milspec tubes capability to address recoil, even when taking the best tubes into consideration. That's a physical tube limitation of the part that is actually made by ITT or Litton.

While some tubes tend to be more fragile than others due to MCP/PC spacing inside the tube you can hedge your bets by going for a larger halo specification, which is indicative of the MCP/PC spacing.

I guess the main question is why do you want to put a PVS-14 on a .308 in the first place? I mean, it's not exactly a short-range caliber and the PVS-14 is not a long-range scope? If you're using a larger round, wouldn't you be better off with something designed for longer ranges?

This. As has been said some tubes can be hand selected to be less likely to suffer damage but nothing is a guarantee.

Thanks David. I had wanted to use it on a SCAR17s. I guess is am SOL on that one, but I might be able to use it on my Grendel. I can't afford a clip on like the PVS22 or PVS 24.

You can use a PVS14 over one eye and red dot with the other at the same time. With a little practice your brain does a good job of superimposing the two.

And you don't need any special site, nor do you need to mount the NV on the rifle.

Thanks! Which do you recommend? Do I really need an IR laser ? Could I wear a helmet mounted PVS14 and a rifle with an tripower without an IR laser?

Interesting. I might have to try that. I will need a helmet for the NV because I shoot holding the rifle with both hands.

I wasted a lot of ammo trying to make that work on small targets like skunks and armadillos. I just bought a cheap visible laser and solved the problem.

To be honest... I'm about 3 weeks ahead of you asking the same question you are asking.. Victor with TNVC on his web form has alot of answere you will be asking now and in the future. Dino FWIW seems to be here trying to right the wrongs of the NV world and I really enjoy reading his posts. There is one more guy that's posting alot of good information on this form but I forget his name. Just do alot of reading and get ready to buy some gear. The way I did it was buy once.. Cry once.

Having said all this.. Be very careful what you mount your NV on !!!! Just because it's not an 308 doesn't meen it's ok!!! I still can't believe I can not shoot my PVS14 on my 9mm rifle but it will kill my NV if I do. Buy an helmet and no you dont need an IR laser BUT IT SURE IS NICE TO HAVE!!!
I sold my TROMIX S17 and 12ga suppressor to buy my gear but I will get more use age out of it.. Welcome to the form.

Edit...cj7hawk was the other guy I was talking about..
