Alright, thanks to the generosity of a member on the night vision forum, who can reveal himself if he wants to, i am getting a very good deal on night vision. I want to thank them for their generosity and it proves to me just how good a community arfcom can be. But i do have some questions so i stop flooding him with them.

1. The model i'm gettng is a gen 3 PVS-7. I am wondering what are some good accessories to buy for the night vision itself. Sacrificial lens? I know the lens cloths are most likely a must, is there a way to tether pvs-7s to your gear?

2. Helmet mount. I want to mount these on a Protec helmet. I also want to mount a light to the side of it, What parts will i need to place an order with TNVC for? I may try to source some parts at a gunshow if possible.

3. Whats the overall dimensions of a PVS-7 so i can pick out a nice pelican case for them?

Go with the Pelican 1400. It will fit the 7 with room to spare for other stuff. Mounts ?? I could type pages !! It really boils down to what you can afford. Almost any mount for a 14 will work with a 7. You just don't need a J arm as the hook up is built into the 7.

Look at the helmet mounted night vision thread and decide what works for you. Night Vision is ALL about what you want and need. I like to boat and fish. My needs do not come close to what the Texas guys use to hunt hogs.

Night Vision is just not a one size fits all kind of environment. Nothing works great for everything. eBay is a good place to find cheap bargains but understand lots of cheap Chinese junk exists. Some are decent and others best used to melt down for scrap. It is a roll of the dice.

My advice per our PM. Read , read and more read !! The information is in this forum but you must take the time to learn. I am self taught, never went to any night vision school. What I learned anybody can learn if willing to take the time. There are so many guys here way smarter than me and the only way I can compete is to read, read and read. I know it sounds like a broken record but night vision is complicated despite the ones who try to tell you it is simple.

Assemble a PVS-14 ?? Yup, not really hard but the details are what gets you. Videos on YouTube don't really show you the hard part. Assembly is easy but experience makes a great scope. Anyone with experience will tell you the same thing. Learn all you can and be thankful you found this forum. We don't take advantage of our members and give them sound advice !

I am constantly reading now Dino, Theres just so much stuff i dont know about night vision accessory wise, and am even shakey on the basics of how a NV device works, but you've been very helpful in answering my questions along with everything ive read on this forum in the past few months.

If you are getting a protech you'll probably want some counterweights to make it more comfortable. With the right counterweights you can take the tension off your head and chin. This as expensive as the velcro weights from TNVC to as cheap as ducktape and leftover lead ingots from bullet casting. I've done both and they both work well. (though one looks silly what with the ducktpe and all.)

As much as i like the Ops core jump helmet, i cant see dropping that much on a plastic helmet. I would rather buy a IR laser first.

You can get a USGI helmet mount for your Protec helmet off of Ebay. It works decent enough. Look for the PASGT helmet mount as it works better than the ACH helmet mount. You can use a molle pistol magazine pouch with a bag full of lead shot as a counter weight. It is much more comfortable than a skull crusher head mount. But, when you spend all the money to get it set up, you won't be all that far off from what an Ops Core helmet cost.

As for an IR laser & illuminator. A great, inexpensive set up is to get on of the cheap IR LED illumiantors or Surefire replacement heads off of Ebay. Then get a Beamshot 1000 IR conversion. Do a search on the archive. It runs about $150 and isn't too hard to do yourself. If you want to spend a bit more on the illuminator, look for a used Surefire 952V on Ebay. You can get a beat up used one for $150 and a NIW one for $250.

I was looking at the 952V's, How is the throw versus something like Da-Torch? I want the most throw, distance wise, That i can get as this will be mostly used in a farm environment.

I put together a cheap IR light that enhances the Gen I pos that I have.
I was looking for an IR flashlight to use as an immediate area light; for short distances or looking in the back of the truck or inside without using a white light.
Anyway, I put together a Solar Force L2 flashlight host and the IR LED assembly from Lighthound.com for just under $40.
It gives a wider beam (from what I can tell, more of a flood light) out to 50-75 yards and supplements my pos NV pretty well (an improvement for it anyway).
If you have better NV, it might do even more. ymmv

The 952V illuminates out to 150 yards or so. Where the Torch runs out to 300 yards. The Surefire has a wider beam with a decent hot spot. The Torch is a bit narrow, but that is needed for distance.

Tha cheap IR LED heads illuminate out to 100-125 yards. It isn't bit as bright as the Surefire and the beam spread isn't as uniformed. But for the money, it is close and a hard bargain to pass up.

It should be noted that there is a limitation of being able to effectively identify targets when using unmagnified NV. I have used the 952v and the torch. Even though the torch may reach further it served me no functional use a distances greater than 100 yards under normal conditions with non magnified PVS-14.

I actually personally prefer the beam on the surefire.

Ok, i was also looking at that new inforce weapon light that comes in IR.

Also, on lasers, since im gonna run a PVS-7, i believe i want to run an OTAL ontop of my rail. What distance do you sight these in at, and im guessing you're going to need a rest like a lead sled to hold the rifle completely still to zero the laser the best you can?

Also, does anyone use the Blade-tech molle hard cases for the AN PVS-7/14?
