Can anyone identify tube generation by picture?
I'm chatting via email with a gentleman about purchasing a used set of AN/PVS-7 goggles. They are unmarked with the exception of a white serial number where the manufacturer sticker usually is. He's tried to take a picture with a phone camera. I'm wondering if anyone can guess as to the generation of the tube by looking at the picture. He says the view is crisp and focussed, but he's having difficulty capturing it with the phone camera. I've asked for another picture outside with no IR, but this is what I have for now. Any input would be appreciated.

From the pic - Im guessing 3rd gen

Is it the color, clarity, or a combination?
For me its the color with the IR on - I see it almost every night. Couple guy's on here will pop up shortly, they will either confirm or correct this for sure

You do have to watch out for gen2 tubes in 7's - & very early low spec 3rd gen tubes also. Gen 3 shot I took for someone else last night

Here's a second pic. I need some guidance on the tube specs=remember pics are taken from a cell phone.

Telling what the tube is from a picture is very difficult.
At best you'll get bad advice - Ask him to remove the tube and read out any details on it if you need to be certain -

David
My bet goes for Gen3 OMNI III - but it's just a bet, no serious opinion..
Although getting a Gen2+ PVS-7 would be almost as rare as winning a lottery - there were quite few of them and even less are still in operation today.

It's a shame the IR is on - with a little more darkness the characteristics of the tube will start to come out.

There's something missing in that last picture

Can't seem to focus on the question at hand.

"This image or video has been moved or deleted" LoL!
Yeah, I saw it too.. :) Nice resolution...
Would have been nice to have seen it before it went ghost on us........ Anyway the gen 2 warning was just that a warning several people own that ATN gen 2 pvs-7 abomination here in the states & several sellers carry gen2 plus pvs-7's I'm fairly sure we have a 3gen tube here from the pic, but as David said check the tube for a proper identification. Buying second hand is a risk as with anything else - but it can payoff.

My guess as well. Its a bit more greenish than yellowish suggesting a P20 phosphor (which was used on Gen2 and early Gen3 tubes).
I took the 2nd pic down. I was afraid the seller might not appreciate his wife being posted. It was a much better pic than the dog. So consensus is gen3-probably. Thanks for the help. If I end up getting it, I'll let you know what the tube is.

Found one once and only once. Good tube and I was impressed for US gen 2. From my understanding they were mostly export tubes. Finding one is the US is rare indeed. Mine must have got lost and found its way back home some how. He performed well but not as well as his stable mates so off he went. I did like that tube and was sad to see it go but it is in good hands in retirement now so I am not worried. Only used for special occasions.
