 FA SBR?

So my future plans involve building a FA SBR AR-15. I'm just now diving into this genre of the Black Rifle, so questions abound. Getting these two questions answered will be enough for now though:

1) What's the process? Do I have to register and engrave it as both a FA and a SBR, or does registering it as FA negate the barrel length requirement?
2) I plan to firsts establish a corporation or a trust. Is there a difference, and what's the pros/cons of each?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You are too late to make a FA. The ability to Form 1 a full auto ended May 19, 1986.

So I'll have to acquire a "pre-ban" lower, and then proceed to SBR register it?

If you buy a registered MG the MG part trumps the SBR so to speak and you can put a short barrel on the MG.

The term "pre-ban" is used for semi-auto Assault Weapons made before the AWB of 1994.

The term you are looking for is Registered Transferable M16, which means it was registered with the ATF on or before May 18, 1986 and in the NFA registry as a Machine Gun. But you can also acquire Transferable RDIAS or RLL that will legally convert an AR15 to Full Auto.

Bottom line price if you luck out is $5,000 for a RLL, more commonly about $7,000.00 for a RLL. A registered M16 receivers are $9k-25K depending on the manufacture and style, or NIB etc... RDIAS are in the $12K-$16K range.

Second part of your question , a MG is not rifle by definition and can never be a SBR so there is no need to register any SBR items on a MG.

it would have had to been a MG prior to 5/19/1986, not just existed.

you have three options for building a legal full auto AR15:

1) Registered Receiver (RR) / Transferable M16
2) Registered Drop In Auto Sear (RDIAS)
3) Registered Lightning Link (RLL)

either way the MG trumps the SBR status and can use any barrel length you wish.

the RDIAS and RLL can be used in any host AR15. while they are in place, the host gun can use a short barrel, BUT if you remove the RDIAS or RLL, the host AR15 becomes an unregistered SBR.

Thank you all for the replies and info. Not quite ready to drop $5,000-12,000 just yet, so I'll start off with the SBR.

I hope this unfortunate fact you have learned will galvanize you into a true believer who will not rest until 922(o) is gone. Maybe if we all convert a few fudds we can eventually get rid of it. I believe it can happen. Ask any of the older gun folks you know what they would have told you had you approached them in the 1970s and told them there would be nearly 40 "shall issue" states by 2012.

A poor man's way to make a full auto SBR would be to:

1. Find a cheap lower receiver and register it as an SBR
2. Buy a Slide Fire stock
3.
4. Profit?

I'm amazed at how many people do not know about teh nachine gun ban. God I hate that law.

Yea, your best best is to do as I did. Build an SBR, then get around $15,000 or so, and buy a drop in auto sear for it. Then you are good to go!
