Unless there is a fundamental restructuring at BATFE, the wait times are going to increase.....

indefinitely. Texas may approve suppressors for use on game animals this year, and I can promise you that it will lead to a huge increase in demand from here, and other states will likely be following step as well. This whole process needs revamping.

My paranoid side says that this is why ATF is fine with dropping CLEO. They're not going to add more examiners- they'll just use their current staff and use that to get more funding.

There needs to be an electronic means of approval.

Is there any indication that the ATF would go for such a thing? If it wouldn't be a waste of time, I would consider fleshing out the framework as part of an undergrad project.

The only method by which I ever expect to see the NFA approval process become more efficient is if the SCOTUS throws out the NFA.

Just remember boys and girls, the ATF is not your friend. I had to hold my nose walking past their booth yesterday.

That agency needs rebooting or removing.

It is truly amazing how the first response post almost always nails the answer.

They can't add examiners, there's a hiring freeze.

That freeze will thaw when ATF claims that law enforcement and government transfers are being held up.

not really true. they can't create new positions. they can fill retiree positions and replace people that quit. they can also add as many contractors as they have funding for. since almost every hourly and salary position in the fed gov is done by contractors, they can add as many examiners as they want

Those transfers are already moved to the front of the list.

I had one approved as soon as the envelope was opened. From time delivered to time back in mail to me was measured in minutes. If I was local, LEO could have picked it up same day he signed it and we would have just walked it through.

Meh. Pa has always allowed the use of suppressors on game.

I've become a proponent of adding Examiners for each State in the ATF's Field Office(s). I can't figure out why the .gov has a hiring freeze in place for voluntary tax dollars?

A state like mine would benefit greatly since I'd bet we're one of the more well armed Commonwealths considering NICS BG checks were higher than any other state in our Union.

Heck there's a MG shoot twice a year here...how often have cans, MGs, SBRs, AOWs or DDs been used in a crime here? Never that I remember.

Yup, they are. But they can always claim whatever they want and cite the number of days to approval (even if the figures are twisted) to get what they want.
