5320.20 to transport NFA item to another state.1 form or multiple forms for each stop on the trip?
Several of us in the Tennessee Hometown forum are taking a 2 day rifle class in Mississippi this spring.
I know if I want to take my SBR, I need to fill out a 5320.20 form with the address of the range where the training class takes place.
One of the guys in our local area is VERY knowledgeable about NFA items. He said that recently his examiner
told him that not only does he need to fill out a form to transport his SBR to the range, he would also
need to fill out a seperate form for each stop in each city on his trip.
So for instance, if I plan on shooting in one town, eating dinner in another town, and spending the night in a hotel in yet another town, then I would need to
fill out a 5320.20 with the address of each place I intend to stop.
Has anybody else experienced this or was his examiner having a bad hair day?
Are these all for cities in the same state? If so, you only need one approved .20 per state.

Yes all locations are for the same state in cities within 20 miles of the range where the class is being held.
Same county in fact.

This is strange. We must have a failure to communicate on one end or the other.
I have a form for each STATE that I intend to SHOOT in. I've never heard of a need to have a form for every state that you may pass through, let alone each city you may spend some time in.
The form is permission for interstate transportation and verifies that the state in which you intend as a destination allows you to posses the items listed on the form. Once you have permission for interstate transportation, there is no federal statute that requires permission for individual location within that state. That would be INTRAstate transportation and is not restricted by federal statutes.

I agree that there had to be a misunderstanding by the examiner.
The guy that told the story is in the industry and has his shit together.
I am going to fill out the form for the range in MS where the class is being held and be done with it.
How long does it take to get those approved and a copy returned?

About 3 weeks.
I mailed mine yesterday.
I will post when it comes back.
You only need paper for destination state (Mississippi)... you is free to stop and eat, use the facilities and flush, and buy fuel freely along your travel to the destination..
You DO NOT need paper for each Wendys stop, or gas station along your route.
Got my approved 5320.20 back this past week.
Mailed 1/06/2012
Received 1/17/2012
11 days from mailbox to mailbox is pretty good.
My trip is in 11 days. I mailed it two weeks ago. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Why does everbody wait till last minute ?? My 2012 forms were all done and approved in Sept 2011 for the 2012 yr.
It'd be a real bitch to plan for every piss break, fill up chow stop and motel room on a trip from SD to FL.

I sent the form as soon as I knew I was going. Which was about a month beforehand.

Like SBR7_11, I generally fill out forms for any state that I think I might want to visit in the coming year, plus any state that's nearby just in case. No last-minute rush that way.
I've gone so far as to write in the "reason for transporting" box, something to the effect of: "traveling to state X through states A, B, C, D,..." listing all the states that I might be driving through, including the "evil" ones like Illinois. It's okay if it's along the way, and not a destination.
I've now discovered that Louisiana requires the gun to be "registered" there. I faxed the form yesterday and called today. I was told they'll look at it tomorrow.
MOTHER FUCKER!

MOTHER FUCKER!

Are you saying that Louisiana has a state registration for NFA items, or that ANY firearms brought in to Louisiana must be registered in Louisiana?

Basically you have to register NFA firearms with them. It doesn't apply to standard firearms.
ETA- I called again. She said she'll get to it first thing in the morning.
I just sent 5320.20 in for Louisiana this morning , then I read this post.
Any updates on this ?

If you don't send the LA form with the 5320 you will be denied. I finally got the form I needed and got my 5320 approved. Just in time for my trip this week.
Do you have a contact number for someone in LSP ? I can't seem to find one.
Did you send copies of your tax Stamps or anything kind of explanation letter ? The form does not have much on instructions.
i need to get hot on this so I can have it ready when ATF send my denial.
What about suppersors?

A .20 isn't needed for suppressors or AOWs but the ATF will approve one for you.

LSP

I would think this be all you need..
VA is similar if you wish to bring machine gun for visit.. they'll (VA) work with you to get you set for visit.
Thanks, I got them filled out. Even though you don't need the .20 for suppressors you still have to register them as well in La .
just a few more added weeks of waitting , which I'm used to at this point . Wish I had caught this before I mailed in my .20 this morning.
Damn it man !
Concealed Handgun Permit Unit Phone Numbers:

I faxed mine and requested they fax the approved copy back. Then I faxed it to the NFA branch.
