Pellets do not work well in side lock rifles. Some shooters have trouble getting the pellets to work in inline actions.
You are better off using loose powder ( dare I say Pyrodex? ) such as FFFg black powder. More relaible ignition.
I am going on the premis that your rifle is a caplock.
Been answered. The won't work with any sort of reliability. Get loose powder. The pellets are the lazy man's answer to a shooting discipline that lazy men ought to just leave the fuck alone.
I've got an old T/C White Mountain Carbine that I've used pellets in. I had to dribble in a few grains of loose powder prior to dropping in the pellets and it worked just fine (instantaneous ignition with a standard #11 CCI cap). It's the only way I was able to get reliable ignition with pellets though, BTW I only had standard caps to work with (perhaps magnum caps or musket caps would have given better results without the need for the loose powder to aid ignition). Using a standard cap with pellets and NO loose powder I had to use a puller to get the charge out of the barrel, it simply wouldn't ignite. I would follow the advice from the previous posts and just stick with loose powder only for a side lock rifle.

I'm always amused by the vitriol that characterizes black-powder shooters.
Keep it up, it's really classy.
