Good morning,
This past weekend I attended a Project Apple seed course. One of the other folks attending the course showed me and the others a black powder rifle she'd built. And on the second day she fired it off for the class and I was very impressed. It was a beautiful musket!

I'm interested in getting a kit now, I don't want a finished rifle. I'd like to build it myself. I also (if I were wealthy) want one of every common service rifle and hand guns used by the U.S. Military from the revolutionary war to the present day. I think that would be a nice collection.

What was the common rifle or most issued rifle of the revolutionary war? Are there kits of these rifles, if so where should I look?

Track of the Wolf is good place to start your search for a good kit.

Apparently there wasn't a standard issue, like Springfields and Enfields in later wars. Guns weren't mass produced here back then, so your flintlock, stock and barrel should be period-correct, as long as it doesn't have modern bluing, or wood finishes. Dixiegunworks.com is a good place to start.

That would be the Charleville musket. Brown Bess was British.

Read through that thread too.

Like somebody else said, Brown Bess and Charleville were the prominent guns.

I'm building one right now. I decided on a French Tulle, 1750 era, which is period correct too. Gots a nice style too. I wouldn't go with just any kit, you want the nicer locks etc.., I paid $600 for my kit and even had them sodered the lugs and front sight on. They even channeled it for the barrel and cut out for the lock. I still have plenty to do, sand medal, wood, fit parts, browning (blueing) finishing, etc...
Here is a good site to pick any style you like to build.

Ray franks helped me out a great deal, now I have to do my part. Good luck in chooseing and let us know what you decided.
