As far as build quality goes, they're the same. They were built on the same machinery.

However, the Russian rifles have been refurbished, and the Chinese ones haven't. Thus the Russian rifles appear to be (and are) in better condition than the Chinese ones. Both rifles will still generally work, however, they're Mosins.

The Chinese will be cheaper, but the Russians generally come with accessories (cleaning rod, sling, etc) that you will have to source for the Chinese guns. That stuff isn't expensive, but it does add up.

SOG has both in stock, IIRC.

Just personal preference, I would get the Russian. They're scarce now. Maybe the next fun show or local fun shops. They show up every now and then in the local gun store here. I bought one last year before Christmas from AIM. It's a 1944 Tula, 1 of 100,000 (according to 7.62x54r.net). It still has the original finish stock. Much character. Looks to have been re-blued at some time. No refurb marks at all, and the action is like butter.
There's just something about a rifle that likely used to defend mother Russia. The history makes it way cool.

I would not care which one. I would only get one that hasn't been counterbored.

If you're buying sight-unseen and want a non-counterbored rifle go with the Type 53. I've never seen one that was counterbored.
