M1 carbine value
Local shop has a 4 million serial postal meter m1 carbine sling and oiler included has marlin barrel p mark on pistol grip also a star with 77 on the left side mint bore has bayonet lug also. Worth $675? Anything I should look for?
I would say that is pretty close to what you would expect price wise. Postal Meters get a little more than say underwoods or inlands.
M1 carbines are pretty simple - not much you would need to check. Work the bolt back and see if it is smooth - it should clickity-clack back and forth smoothly. Check the bore for wear.
Be warned, but some carbines will sit "looser" in the stock. Just a part of their design/normal wear. Some folks will re-bed them to tighten them up. From what I have seen, it does not affect accuracy too much.
Is it import marked?
the underside of the barrel has a very faint import marking, looks like some letter then a clear VT, Stock has a circple P on the pistol grip and FAT 77 appears to be an Italian used carbine. Local gun show is Saterday, not sure if I should buy this gun or just look at the gunshow.
Thanks, CLayton
Import marked will drop the price a little. Most likely CAI St. Alb VT.
I would not want to pay more than like 600-650 for that one on the high end. Carbines are a little harder to come by now (CMP sold out, or was at least) so even imports command a good price.
I would hit the gunshow and see what you can find, and if no luck I would not hesitate to lowball the seller on that carbine.
Normally a import mark doesn't bother me but with a M1 Carbine it would, and from what I see it has an effect on value. I think 575 is about top dollar for it. Watch selling prices on Gunbroker for awhile. $600 should be a nice M1 with a few mags.
I should have explained why the import mark may hurt the value.
A couple of importers back in the day on M1 Garands and M1 Carbines were stamping the bejesus out of the barrels with their import mark, so heavily in fact that they were deforming the barrel.
These import markers gave all import marked carbines and garands a bad name. You just have to inspect the import mark on these guns and verify that they do not look like they were stamped by the hand of God.
I have a a carbine that is import marked, and like the one you are looking at, it is very very lightly struck and it is a great great shooter. Just have to be aware and inspect the stamping.
Yeah the mark is very very faint. Almost did not notice it, If i bring some M2 ball ammo how far should it go into the muzzle?
You got me on that one, I never muzzle tested mine. I just verified that the bore was not a sewer pipe (I think it was Korean imports or some Asian country imports, the bores were NOT well cared for and looked like an old sewer pipe).
I would assume it would be along the same lines as a garand or 03 - if no copper jacket is showing, then that is bad. The more copper jacket showing the better it will be lol
Picked up the carbine good thing gun show prices were crazy on m1's

That is the test. Muzzle not touching the case mouth, farther the better.
