Local gun shop's smith helped me out a bit for free so i decided to look around and buy something to say thanks.

I've got a garand, m1 carbines, mosin nagants and have had an enflield but never a mauser.

Say this in the rack for $179 so i decided to pick it up. $190.75 out the door.

Receiver has been ground but it looks different than other photos i've seen. All the other markings seem to be intact. small eagles with swastikas are all intact, little worn. No import marks anywhere, barrel is marked 7.90 (shouldn't it be 7.92?) Shouldn't the side of the receiver be marked Model 98?

All matching except for the stock. Good price?

Looks like a Romanian capture that was put in another stock. The Romys really hacked on the markings.

I don't think you paid too much.

That grind is probably pretty close to the upper locking lug. Idk If you should shoot it.

If anything you could find a bubba'd mauser and swap everything over.

From the looks of it, you have an early war barreled action on a late war stock. They scrubbed the reciever way more than neccesary, and I to would be hesitant to shoot it. Mausers are robust actions but there is alot of important metal missing.

The pictures are worse then it is.

I shot one round out of last saturday with no ill effects (only had 1 rd on hand). I also took it back to the gunsmith and he said it was fine and that the previous owner shot it.

Should be a good shooter and example of a WWII mauser for my collection.

Nice rifle for the price, I see your in MI, where in MI are you at, and what shop was this? Do they have any other similar deals on old mausers? I am looking for something exactly like this. Feel free to email or PM me the info.

Thanks,
Jason

I think you were fine on how much you paid.
Sum of the parts is way more than that. If you would tear it down and sell off all the individual parts, you would go well beyond 179 lol

It looks like a lot of metal missing, but I think there is still enough there for it to be fired safely but it sure does look like they hacked the hell out of it.

As a previous posted said, it is a 1939 rifle in a mid/late war stock. Really is a shame that the Romanians or whoever got ahold of it, destroyed the maker and Mod 98 marking.

Tri city area.

Got it from williams in auburn.

They have a couple turkish and yugo mausers. This was the only german.

Turks are abotu what i paid and the yugo's vary up to about 350 or so.

I think you did fine. I would get a front sight hood for it, but that's me.

Also, the 7.90 on your rifle just means it has a little tighter bore. One of mine is 7.91, just means it was a little tighter when they made it.
I think I remember reading a while back that they could be marked from 7.89 all the way up to 7.93. (This was a while ago and heresay on a forum, so may not be gospel).

It looks like the proofs on the right receiver read WaA623. That would make the receiver a Steyr-Daimler. Not sure why they ground the receiver ring. If it was a Steyr it would have just read "660" above the 1939. 1939 Steyrs did not have the "Mod. 98" stamping.

The rifle was rebuilt at some point. The front sight base has the grooves for the sight hood. Those were not implemented until 1940. The front barrel band is mid to late war(stamped). The rear band is early to mid war(milled).

How's the bore?

I think you got a good price on it if the bore is good. I would not hessitate to shoot that. The grinding is more than necessary, but far from the point where it would be dangerous. I've seen tons of south American Mausers with crests ground off that bad or worse that people have been shooting for years w/o issues.
