Another "need some help with and enfield purchase" question

I was recently shown an Enfield No 4 Mk2 up for sale. Serial is PF2232XX with matching wood, magazine and receiver, but mis-matched bolt. Wood is in good condition, glossy black (parkerizing?) is worn off in the high spots. Had lots of debris in the barrel like it had not been cleaned in a long time. I asked the seller if we could run a brush with solvent through it a few times, did that and still has debris in grooves. I am unsure if this will clean up with more agressive brushing later. Gun would come with bayonet and a couple extra magazines. Seller wanted $300, but he and my father are on the FD togeather so he told me $250. Thoughts? Worth buying? I got a bunch of pics of it on my phone that I cant post here, but I can look over if I havent posted enough info.

The bore needs more scrutiny- sounds like it may have been fired with corrosive ammo and not cleaned or not properly cleaned.

For 250, jump all over it. It will never fail you.

If you can't verify whether or not the bore will clean up, pass on it. They're not that hard to find with decent bores, even if you end up paying a little more.

Too much for a mismatch. WAY too much for a mismatch with a iffy barrel. $200-225 tops.

I'm going to go with this. If the bore was okay I'd think about it, but honestly the bolt is the important part to have matching, and with a questionable bore, I'd pass.

1950 Fazakerley arsenal (Liverpool) build. The black finish is called stoving. The funky bore would be my biggest concern. Bolt mismatch is not as big a deal with Enfields as with other rifles because the headspace is adjusted by changing to a different sized screw-on bolt head. These bolt heads are getting harder and harder to find in the larger (longer) sizes, though. $200 tops if you want to risk cleaning the barrel up and finding the correct bolt head.

I have .303 headspace gauges if you're nearby and need to borrow them.

ETA: Missed the extra magazines. Add $10 each above and beyond the one in the rifle.

Thanks, everyone for the feedback. One other thing I had not mentioned is that I was unable to find an import mark on the receiver or end of the barrel, so unless it is in a weird place I don't think it has a mark. From what everyone is posting I think I will tell the guy that if it was mis-matched bolt and good bore or matched bolt and poor bore I would have gone $250 but because of the mismatch and the poor bore I wouldnt feel comfortable giving more than $200. Maybe if he had some ammo to also throw in I would go $250.

As for headspace, I think I have a friend who may have the gauges too, but if not I right smack in the middle of NH lakes region

PF2232XX is a early MkII Faz build, 1950 by my records. The later six digit PF series were not built in numerical sequence. I had a MkII very close to this number and it appeared to have been in service in a SE Asian common wealth country.

The extra mags are worth about $40 each on todays market if in good condition. You should pick the mag that works best in the rifle and use it only. The rifle is not intended to have the mags changed for reloading, that's what the stripper clips are for.

Can you test fire the rifle a few rounds? Often with LE's a bad looking barrel may shoot fairly well, or at least better than expected.

Good wood, good metal finish, mis-matched bolt that well pass head space may be worth $200-250. The bayonet is $20 or more depending on marking. If it's a cruciform it can be several hundred.

Again, thanks to everyone. I ended up buying the rifle for $250 with some extras. In addition to what was originally included, the seller threw in an ammo can, sling (pretty sure not original), 7 stripper clips, 67 rounds of ammo. Ammo I believe is old surplus with POF 64 on the headstamp. Think I did pretty well for the price w/ extras but will still be lookin for a nice matching one, plus this will be my first Enfield (unless you count my Khyber pass one ).
