If someone found a nice M39 with a cracked stock....

I know, I know, they're all cracked. :) This one is pretty bad. Like when you torque on the butt plate while holding the receiver you could see the crack open up. Is that repairable? Does it diminish the value tremendously? If so, how much?

Is it fixable? Is it possible to buy an M39 stock anywhere? I guess since so many are cracked that it would be rather difficult to find a loose stock laying around.

Opinions?

Thanks.

ETA: Oops. The crack goes from the middle of the receiver on the top, directly behind the bolt (center) around the left side of the stock and back to the left side of the trigger. Literally I think the only solid wood is on the right hand side of the receiver.

Yikes, if I were you I would start by going to surplusrifles forum's stock repair and refinishing section, you can get an idea of what others have done.

What he said. Super glue and a brass screw can work wonders. Stay away from Gorilla glue. it foams up.

It seems that an abnormally large percent of M39s has that same crack in the stock that you describe. Both of mine have a small hairline crack behind the tang, that I'm sure would develop into the same thing you have. I think the Finns must have done a lot of shooting without checking that the action screws were tight.

Yep, or if all else fails there is a member over there that fixes stocks by the screen name of candyman, he is very very good at what he does. He's quite busy, but well worth the time if you have something you want done right. He fixed a 100+ yr old shotgun butt stock that had the toe missing, and 3 cracks and he fixed them all up and made it last another 100yrs

I found that exact thread when I was searching Google last night. It seems pretty easy when the crack is oriented the way his crack was.

The crack on this gun is more like this:

It's just a 1942 vkt. It's nice, but not a gem. I would like it as a shooter, and I would like to preserve it as much as possible while also making it safe to shoot.

What is the value of this rifle with the crack? I didn't notice any other issues, there are no other accessories at all. I honestly forgot to look to see if the numbers matched or not. Trying to figure out if I want to take a risk on it or not.

You could maybe try O_P's fix, or a variation, no idea of it's value with a crack
